Our Path Note Topic
On October 13, 2022 a report was released by two non-profit organizations called New Classrooms and Transcend. The article is called "Out of the Box" (Joel Rose, Jeff Wetzler, and Jenee Henry Wood).
The report discusses the old school paradigm of the Industrial Era versus the Student-Centered Paradigm for which they promote. The authors interviewed, partnered, and were advised by dozens of people as people from MIT, Columbia University, Christensen Institute, Person, Gates Foundation, Michael Horn, University of Southern California, The Hunt Insititute and many more.
The report promotes Innovative Learning Models that look at operantional design, technology and data, teacher practices and academic design. They prescribe 10 Leaps for 21st Century Learning. High expectations with unlimited opportunities, whole-child focus (cognitive, emotional, social and physical factors that impact development), Rigorous learning (critical thinking skills), Relevance (interests and goals of the students), Affirmation of Self and Others (each student develops a unique sense of self and purpose and a respect for others), Social consciousness (dealing with life's challenges), Connection & Community (working collaboratively with the community and its citizens), Customization (individualized for the student), Self-Direction (helping students with agency--learning and exploring on their own), and Anytime, anywhere learning (not tied down to the traditional classroom).
Finally, the group encourages and provides advice to the various stakeholders as the legislators and communities that usually have a lot to criticize about our schools, but with no solutions or no reasonable solutions.

Can you answer these?
What’s the one thing that’s better than a Friday night?
What day of the week is an egg’s least favorite?
What did the Iceberg say to the Romaine on Friday?
What does a mathematician say when something goes wrong?
What job would you get fired if you went the extra mile?
Piece of the Puzzle
This Week's Piece of the Puzzle is Stephanie Benke. Steph Behnke is a member of the district's Career Committee. She recently organized WASHS's Career Exploration event that was held on October 28, 2022. Steph recommended a guest speaker that was well-received by students and planned the schedule and activities for the day. The event was well-organized and gave learners a great opportunity to identify their career cluster of interest. In addition to her role as a chemistry teacher at WASHS, she recently became the co-advisor for Student Council and is also pursuing a doctorate degree in Creativity & Innovation through Drexel University.
Join us in congratulating Stephanie Behnke as this week's Piece of the Puzzle.
New Policies
Suggested revisions and new policies come from the PA School Board Association, board members, staff, administration, and others. The proposed policy goes to the Policy Committee for review. The Policy Committee will either approve the proposed policy to go to full board for review and adoption, or will deny or wait for a different time to revisit it.
Even though it will not be weekly, stay tuned for any new and/or recently adopted policies in this section.

Food Policy Update: White House National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition and Health
Of particular note: Modernize federal programs so enrolled individuals can more easily utilize benefits. Many federal programs were established decades ago. To bring federal nutrition assistance programs into the 21st century:
- USDA, through support from ARP funds, will expand online shopping in WIC.
- Online shopping is currently only being piloted in a small number of WIC state agencies.
- USDA will also propose to update regulations to make the SNAP online shopping program permanent and continue to add more online retailers and states to the existing program.
- Online shopping can expand access to healthy food and break down barriers for marginalized communities and older adults who may face discrimination or stigma, increased health risks, or have limited mobility or transportation.
- Additionally, SNAP participants are not currently able to use their benefits to purchase certain prepared foods, which limits choices for families shopping at SNAP-authorized retailers.
- And, as WIC comes up for renewal by Congress, the Administration supports addressing WIC eligibility limitations to avoid nutrition gaps during key stages of life.
