Policy #78
Primary Lesson
Learning Goal
The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize students with policy #78 -Digital Citizenship.
It is important to note that this lesson is just the beginning of an ongoing conversation around the policy, digital citizenship and appropriate use of technology.
Further resources and activities have been suggested at the end of this lesson.
Length of lesson: approximately 40 minutes/1 period

Policy #78 Overview
Activation & Consolidation
There are three areas of focus in the video that have been drawn from policy #78:
After watching the above clip and understanding your community of learners, choose 1 of the following conversations. You may also feel it is necessary to continue through out the week with the other two options.
- Green-using devices for learning
- Yellow-Good Digial Citizenship
- Red-Care of Devices
After watching the above clip and understanding your community of learners, choose 1 of the following conversations. You may also feel it is necessary to continue through out the week with the other two options.
Option A-We Use Our Devices for Learning
Materials Needed: Sticky Notes, Chart Paper or a Shared Digital Text (Office 365, Smart Ideas, Pic Collage, etc)
As a class, brainstorm a list of ways we use technology each day (e.g. class twitter, skylander, pic collage, minecraft). As students suggest various uses of technology, write each idea on a different sticky note.
Once you have 10 or more suggestions, as a learning community sort your suggestions into an overlapping Venn Diagram with Educational-Learning on the one side and Fun on the other side.
Please Note: It is important to allow students to justify their thinking. Although we may not be as familiar with some tools they may suggest like Minecraft it is important to value their experiences and perspectives. If there is a concern with a student suggestion it is ok to leave it outside the Venn for future research and investigation.
Modifications: You may choose to have students brainstorm and sort their activities in small collaborative groups in the upper primary years or you may choose to have students individually brainstorm a variety of ways they use technology in a day through pictures and words before sorting as a whole class.
Consolidation: As a learning community, summarize your learning by completing the following statement on a shared document (e.g. chart paper, pic collage):
We use our devices for learning when we...
This can become a reminder through out the year that could be revisited as more tools are explored.

Option B-We are Good Digital Citizens
Materials Needed (optional): two computers or old technological devices to help spark the drama exploration
Using the voices in the head strategy, have a learner volunteer to be the 'good digital citizen'. You may choose to use the technology as a prompt to identify the students are in an online environment.
As the following scenarios are presented, have students in the class come 'whisper' suggestions to the good digital citizen.
Please note: depending on your classroom community and shared experiences you may find some scenarios will be better suited for your lesson. Choose accordingly.
Scenarios:
A. I'm on the Office 365 newsfeed and I see someone has posted something mean about a friend in class. What should I do?
B. This is a cool game but they want me to give my name and address and birthday. What should I do?
C. This is a really funny picture of my friend. They are going to be so surprised when I share it with the class! Should I post it?
D. I am looking for information about animals. That does not look like a website about animals. What should I do?
Consolidation: As a learning community, summarize your learning by completing the following statement on a shared document (e.g. chart paper, pic collage):

Option C-We Take Care of Our Devices
Materials Needed: Chart paper or a shared digital text (Office 365, Pic Collage, Word), best buy flyer or other technology flyer (optional), personal device
Share how important your personal device or a school shared device is to you, how you use it for learning and how hard it would be to replace (you may use the classroom computer set up).
You may want to use flyers for stores like best buy or Future Shop to explore some of the costs of digital devices.
At the school we invest in technology because we know it is an engaging learning tool. Your parents at home may have invested in technology too to help you learn. How can we show we are responsible users of the technology? How can we take care of our devices?
On a shared text (chart paper or digital) create a T chart of ways we can take care of shared school devices and ways we can take care of personal devices.
