May and June 2022


These final two months we will be working on the following standards and continuing to explore the theme "Pollinators":

-Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

-Identify the main topic of a multiparagraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.

-Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

-Explain how specific images contribute to and clarify a text.

We will also be working on a literature unit addressing the following standards:

-Lesson, message, and moral

-How characters respond to an event or challenge

-Describe the structure of a story

-Point of view

-Compare and contrast

-Opinion Writing

In Fundations, we will be finishing Unit 9, 10, and 11. Here is what to expect:

Unit 9:

-R-controlled syllable type

-sounds of er, ir and ur

-combining r-controlled syllables with er, ir, and ur with other syllable types

-dictionary skills

-sample words: burst, termite, dirty

-heart words: picture, learn, earth, father, brother, mother

Unit 10:

-double vowel syllable type

-sounds of ai, and ay

-combining all types of syllables


-sample words: paint, display

-heart words: great, country, away, America, school, thought

Unit 11:

-sounds of ee, ea, and ey

-sample words: cheap, keep, chimney

-heart words: whose, won, son, breakfast, head, ready

  • As always, we continue to focus on phonemic awareness through differentiated phonics instruction. Please encourage your second grader to read for 15 minutes for 15 nights this month; as per their April Reading Calendar. Don't forget to practice Heart Words (sight words)!


The end of the school year is looking like so much fun! Students will be visiting Adkins Arboretum the first week of May to make connections with our Life Science that will continue until the end of the school year. In Life Science students will be learning about habitats, seed dispersal, and pollination.


During math, students will solve word problems within 100 and use strategies to add and subtract within 1000 to prepare for 3rd grade!
