Wood Working
The children used wood glue to secure it.
They accidentally glued the structure to the wood working table.
Starting next week, children will be using hammers and nails.
Exploration - Learning Through Doing
This week in Exploration, two students decided to open up a new center. They were interested in opening up a nail salon in the classroom. Before this can happen, these students realized that they would have to first visit a nail salon and collect some information about how they run, what materials they need, and why they are open.
Some of the questions that they came up with were:
How do you open up a nail salon?
Where do you buy all of the nail polish?
Do you use any other materials, or just nail polish?
How do you become a person who can work at a nail salon?
A small group visited a local nail salon and asked the manager these questions. They spent some time speaking with customers about their experience there and taking photographs.
At the end of the visit, they realized that they would need to save money to open up a salon and would have to learn how to paint nails....where could this study go? To be continued...
Math Workshop
If you'd like to play this game alongside your child, feel free to email us. We could set up a time either before or after school to introduce a variety of tile activities to you.
Writing Workshop
Reading Workshop
We also reviewed the tools we have learned and will continue to use for the rest of our lives as readers:
Readers scan the pictures that they see in their books to get more information. Using the picture can help us figure out tricky words.
Readers use the first letters and first part of the word to figure out what it could be. When you use the first part, you need to still ask yourself, “Does it make sense?”
At home, you can review the tools that are in each Maple's toolbox. When you notice your Maple encounter a tricky word, ask them what strategy they are using to help them.
Sight words this week: I'm, because
In Word Study, we are all learning different sounds/letters and exploring different word families. Some of us have been learning about short vowels and the sounds that they make. We practiced spelling and writing words that had the short i and short u sound. A few words are: shut, hut, zip, lip, pig, hill.
Some of us began exploring digraphs, which are two letters that make a new sound when put together: wh, th. We went on a word hunt for words that began and ended with these digraphs. We also did a few partner sorts!
