September Happenings

We have a busy month!

This week on Thursday, Sept. 3rd, students will arrive at school two hours later so that teachers can participate in staff development. So, if you normally drop off your child at 7:50, on Thursday, they should arrive at 9:50 AM. On Friday, September 4th, midterms end and your child's grades will be sent home on Tuesday, September 8th. If you have questions on your child's grades, please contact the teacher. If your child has scored a D or lower in a subject, a summary will be sent home. This will indicate any assignments that are missing. Your child will have until the first of October to bring up their grades.

The PTO will meet on the second Tuesday of every month, September 8th will be the date for this month. The meetings begin at 6:30 PM in the cafeteria. We encourage parents to come to the meetings to give your input to this important group that supports our school. They plan wonderful events for our students! We have a family dance scheduled for later in September. More information will be coming home on the dance.

Grandparents' Day celebration is coming up this month! On September 15th from 9:00-10:30, we will host Grandparents' Day for kindergarten through second grade. Grandparents for students in grades 3-5 will visit on September 16th from 9:00-10:30. There will be a short program in the gym beginning at 9:00 AM. We ask Grandparents to come in and have a seat in the gym. We will set up chairs for those who cannot climb bleacher steps. The students will perform and then we will give directions on where the students and Grandparents are to start their visit. We will have picture opportunities in the gym, refreshments in the cafeteria, the book fair in the library, and visits to classes planned. We always consider it an honor to have our Grandparents visit with us. The refreshments are sponsored by the PTO. If a Grandparent has children in two grade level groups, they may visit either day. A special friend may be invited if your grandchild has no grandparent(s) who are able to attend.

Pictures will also be taken of all students for our yearbook on September 17th. There will be information sent home before picture day. There are ways to purchase pictures online or you may send the money to school. Crabtree Photography will take our pictures.

The mobile health unit is continuing to visit our school parking lot each Friday from 8:30-11:30 AM. This is open to the community. Also, Open Door will be providing dental exams

and sealant placements for any student who has signed permission. You may pick up permission forms in the school clinic or we can send them home with your child. The dates for the sealant program is September 22nd and 23rd.

Homework Help

Our Homework Help will begin on September 16th. It will be available for those students who have signed up. Volunteers will meet with students from 2:45-4:00 PM. A healthy snack will be served and the volunteers will do their best to complete homework. It depends on your child's focus to complete homework.

Third Grade IREAD Book Club

Through the partnership with Open Door, United Way, and ICAP, our school is able to offer a book club specifically for those third graders, who need extra comprehension skills, to practice before our third graders take the IREAD 3 assessment. The IREAD assessment is given each spring to our third grade students. Those students who do not pass this assessment have to retake the test in the summer. They are given a second chance to pass the assessment. Teachers in the third grade will identify those students who may need the extra support through the book club. Parents will be contacted. The book club will begin September 22nd from 2:45-4:00 and will meet each Tuesday. Parents will also need to provide transportation home from this club. This club is separate from the Book Club for upper grades that is offered through Mrs. Ailes each year.

Computer Lab Is Open Again!

The Wes-Del Elementary Computer lab is open again on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, when school is in session. This is open to anyone in the community from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Please enter the school through the front east doors using the outside sidewalk. Anyone in the community is welcome! Elementary students using the lab should be accompanied by an adult.

After School Hours

Our school is open after school for sporting events and clubs, etc. We have noticed that there have been some of our students returning to school and walking into classrooms and down the hall without an adult. We understand that at times homework is forgotten. A child must be accompanied by an adult when returning to the building. If the classrooms

are locked, a custodian may be able to assist you to pick up a folder or book.

The Homework Hotline

We have had a lot of questions on how to use the homework hotline system. Please call after the office is closed at 3:45. When the message begins follow the prompt and press 1 and you will hear a message about the homework hotline. At that time, you may dial your teacher(s) homework hotline extension. The extension numbers are attached to this email.
