The Moreau Messenger
January And February 2017
Mrs. Delair!
Dear Families,
January has come and gone and now February is here bringing us a new outlook on 2017! In the thick of this cold weather, we have so much celebrating going on inside of our warm and cozy classrooms. As you scroll through this newsletter, you will notice so many exciting adventures that have happened and upcoming events to look forward to. In a couple of weeks, we will have our winter recess (February 20th-24th) and hopefully the kids can get outside and play!
For me this time of year is time to reflect. With the marathon dance just around the corner, Moreau is again serving the community and preparing to help others in the most spectacular way. We are committed to reading! Reading will help us earn money to donate to the marathon recipients. We identify ourselves as a small but an incredible school with a humongous heart for giving and helping others. I am so proud to be a part of the Moreau family.
Happy February, Everyone! May this month bring you peace, happiness and love!
Laura

In January, the Kindergarten studied: physical fitness, nutrition, personal hygiene, Martin Luther King Jr. and multicultural awareness in both social studies and science! In math, we will be focused on comparing length, weight, capacity and numbers up to 20. The children should have all of the letters and their sounds mastered. Now that the letters have all been introduced, practicing letter formation and printing neatly from top to bottom is an important skill to work on nightly, as well as independently applying their letter sounds to read and write. !
A big THANK YOU to our homeroom parents and classroom helpers who have graciously organized parties and are continuing to work in our classrooms this year. You may be getting a phone call to send in party supplies for our future celebrations. Thanks again for all that you do to make Moreau School a great place to be!
We wish you a wonderful 2017 year!!!
February is such a short month in Kindergarten! The children will be very busy writing and sending Valentines to their peers. This is a great time to teach your child about the mail system, and show them first hand how it works. The 100th Day Celebration will be coming up in Feb. Each day the Kindergarten classes count how many days we have attended school until we reach 100! We are also practicing counting to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Please reinforce this skill at home so that your child can become a part of the “100 Club” in Kindergarten! It is amazing how quickly they learn how to count.
February is also Dental Health month and we will celebrate President’s Day as well. We will be focusing on mastering all of the sight words and continuing Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop, as well as addition facts in math lessons.
Please be sure to continue to review: rhyming, beginning, middle, and ending sounds, writing, and the math fact to 5. Keep up the great work! The children should continue to complete their homework on a weekly basis to review and prepare them for first grade. This is an exciting time of the year where the children are reading on their own and excel very quickly. Thanks for all that you do!

Academics
The academics for the new year are already rolling along. In Math we will focus on Addition and Subtraction Within 200 with Word Problems to 100. In E.L.A. our main skill will be reading and writing non-fiction. We will start to move into more Social Studies activities as well which will include Civic Ideals and Practices.
Thank You
Thank you for all of your help and support so far this year. It’s amazing to think how quickly everything is moving.

Completing the weekly book log and handing it in on time continues to be a struggle for many students. The NONFICTION BOOK LOG is due every FRIDAY. It requires students to log how much they have read and complete a short assignment based on the skills that we learned that week in Reader's Workshop. Please ask your child where their reading book log is and please check it over every Thursday night. In addition, it is graded every week.

Moreau Fun Days!
…to benefit the Marathon Dance!
It is time once again for the annual Moreau Elementary Read-a-Thon to help raise money for the South High Marathon Dance. Again this year, we are adding a fun twist to the Read-a-Thon!
We will be having several “Fun Days” at Moreau to encourage students to read, read, read towards their read-a-thon goals.
To participate in the Fun Days, we are asking the students to raid their piggy banks and to make a donation to the Marathon Dance EACH Fun Day. (We are suggesting $1 each day listed below, but would accept any donation!)
For every Fun Friday that you donate, you will be given one ticket. Each ticket will give you a chance to choose a teacher to GET SLIMED on our Read-a-thon Ending assembly on March 3rd.
