A Note From Mrs. Mathe

I remain in awe of the work ethic and dedication to pursuing excellence by both our Powell families and teachers. This week we welcomed some of our most high need students to campus. Joy overwhelmed me on Wednesday morning as I drove to work knowing that we were getting some of our kids back. Once on campus, that same joy was seen from staff members all over the building. It was so apparent to me how much we miss our kids, their smiles, funny stories, hugs and light bulb moments!

I understand that during this time of remote learning for all students, some families have struggled greatly to complete the assignments for the day. Virtual learning should last about 3 hours a day. Of course this time may vary depending on how fast your child works, and if they are still learning the new ways to complete assignments. Our goal is to maintain instructional integrity with our at home learners, while balancing screen time and developmental appropriateness. If you find your child/family is struggling to complete work in a timely manner, please communicate with your child's teacher.

Next week, on Wednesday, August 26th, we will welcome our kindergarten and 1st grade face to face students back to campus. Although some of our first day traditions may not be able to happen, we can make this day feel just as special for our littlest Panthers. When this transition happens for our kindergarten and first grade students, as well as when we begin to teach with both instructional models for 2nd through 4th grades, the daily remote learning schedule will shift to match our daily schedule here on campus. Teachers will be in communication with you regarding the changes in live instruction time as well as possible changes to their Office Hours.

Changes to Instructional Setting

When selecting an instructional setting this year, we asked that the selection made stay consistent through the end of a grading period. So this means that the first opportunity to switch instructional platforms would be October 9th. There are a variety of reasons the district has made this request of families, but the main one that effects our school is class placement. We have worked hard to create balanced classrooms, keeping the number of in-person students as low as possible in each cohort. When families request a change from online to in-person, this begins to create an overflow of in-person learners, which could result in students having to change teacher cohorts to balance out classes.

Our plan as of right now is to send out a survey to our families about 2 weeks prior to the end of the first nine weeks. This will be your opportunity to let us know if you plan to start sending your child to school, or if you want to switch them to virtual learning. We will use the survey results to re-evaluate our campus placements and make adjustments to reflect the new numbers of students requesting in-person instruction.

If you have an extenuating circumstance that requires a change in instructional setting before the end of the first nine weeks, please contact the school to discuss your situation.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work through this new way of "doing school". Please know that all decisions made on campus are in the best interest of the students.
