The Week Ahead in 3-125

January 11, 2016

Happy New Year!

It was so good to see all of our third grade friends return after the holiday break. We started the week learning some fun new greetings to use in our Morning Meetings. We discussed "one little word" and how it can be your guide in the new year. Students chose their one little words and illustrated them. They also shared why they picked their words on a video uploaded to their SeeSaw journals. The class also wrote "I am" poems, which express who they are and how they feel at this moment in time.

Some other exciting events this week: We skyped with a third grade class from Port Jefferson Station. Both of our classes read many books that might be considered for the Caldecott Medal- a wonderful honor for picture books. The Caldecott winner will be announced on Monday, January 12th. Our class selected our favorites and shared them with Mrs. Rosenquist's class. We both picked Finding Winnie as our choice to win the Caldecott! We can't wait to find out what book really wins.

Another exciting happening was receiving our penpal letters from Mrs. Werner's third grade class in Wisconsin. We skyped with them during the Global Read Aloud Project to discuss a book we were both reading, Fish in a Tree. We are happy to be connecting with them as penpals and look forward to sharing our thoughts on a new read aloud, The One and Only Ivan.

The Week Ahead...

Reading: We are reading mystery books in book clubs! Cam Jansen, A to Z Mysteries, Bones the Detective, and Nancy Drew are some of the series we are reading and enjoying. Our class will also begin a new read aloud, The One and Only Ivan.

Writing: We are working on composing literary essays. We also continue to blog each Tuesday and we are learning about being a responsible digital citizen and leaving thoughtful comments on blogs.

Math: We are finishing up Module 3 and learning many concepts such as the associative property, two step problem solving, and skip counting on a number line.

Science: We are exploring life cycles for plants and animals.

Social Studies: We will be sharing the Google Slides projects we created for countries in Library.

Pick A Reading Partner (PARP) begins this Friday! It's a great chance to celebrate reading as a family. Stay tuned for all the great events and reading activities.

Thursday: Fundations Test

Friday: Scholastic book order due

Thank you for the holiday party!

While the holidays feel so long ago now, I do want to give a big "thank you" to Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Springer for organizing our fantastic holiday party. Thank you for the very generous class gift as well! I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday break. We have so much to look forward to in 2016!
