Words from the Woods
Summer 2018
Summer greetings!
I have enjoyed spending time in my garden and with my college-age children, and having adventures! Cindy Sperry and I visited the UN, the Guggenheim Museum, and Columbia University in New York last week, and I plan a trip to Maine to visit my family later in July. Before school starts, Ms. Sperry and I will attend a program on student support at the Stanley King Counseling Institute in Colorado Springs. I look forward to starting a new year with new energy!
In the meantime, I list here a few notes regarding high school at Woods.
There is still plenty of summer left; enjoy!
Best,
Adrienne Berg
Does my student need a laptop?
Woods students have access to technology, internet, and online resources at school, and often need to use collaboration platforms, word processors, multimedia texts, email, databases, online classroom spaces, and other digital tools in their academic work.
Please let the advisor or teachers know if you cannot provide your own device so we can find a workable solution.
Does it have to be a certain kind of computer?
No. Chromebooks, tablets, PCs or Macs all work fine. The main needs are internet access and a keyboard.
Planning on the August SAT?
Common Application opens August 1
Seniors, you can go ahead and get started!
Community service with Habitat for Humanity
Students must accrue 50 hours of community service as a graduation requirement. Summer is a great time for volunteering!
Chatham Habitat for Humanity invites Woods students to get involved. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, contact:
Rachel Horowitz
Volunteer Manager
919-542-0794, ext 228
Community service is:
an action by the student that benefits the community,
outside of school hours,
supervised by an adult,
voluntary (i.e., unpaid, not court-mandated),
in support of a nonprofit, 501 C 3 organization
Books we love
As school ended in June, groups of teachers shared titles of books they love, recommend, or want to share with high school and adult readers. You can view the list-in-progress here:
Woods does not have school-wide summer reading, but we know that we are a community of readers and that teachers and students have more time. Join us in encouraging kids to find something great to read!
2018-19 Schedules
Students and parents will be able to log in to PowerSchool in August. Until then, enjoy your vacation! NCDPI is upgrading the platform and it will not be available until that process is complete. At this time, we do not have a projected date.
An announcement will go out in the Woods e-news and via student emails when the information is available.
Community Work Day
Come on out and be productive! All help welcome. It's a great opportunity to hang out with other Woods folks, get a backstage look at school, and share some of your time with our school. High school students can earn hours towards their community service requirement. Tasks of all kinds, inside and out.
