Letter from the Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
While the official start of winter is not until next week, the winter weather has certainly arrived. Please help us by sending your child prepared to go outside if the windchill is sixteen degrees or above. Even on days we don't go outside, there is always the possibility we would have to evacuate the building, so you may want to think carefully about sending your child to school in shorts. In addition, when there is snow on the ground, it is particularly important that students have appropriate outer clothing, such as jacket, snow pants, boots, hat and gloves. It can be difficult for children to resist the lure of the snow, even if they don't intend to play in it. If they choose not to wear snow pants or boots, they should keep a change of socks and pants in their backpack, so that they do not have to sit in wet clothes for the afternoon.
While the winter break will provide a wonderful opportunity for families to relax and spend time together, you can infuse reading, writing and math into your activities. We have some holiday books that I put away and bring out just at this time of the year. My daughters are so excited when I take them out, and we read them over and over. Printing out the words to some favorite holiday songs and singing together is a good way to build reading fluency. Helping to write messages on cards sending holiday cheer and writing thank you notes to family and friends can provide writing practice and reinforce being caring and grateful. Inviting children to help with cooking or shopping can provide real world math experiences, particularly if you make a point to have your child calculate how much they are spending or how to double a recipe.
Whatever your family chooses to do over the time off, we wish you peace, health and happiness. We look forward to having our students back at Lions Park in 2018!!
Warmly,
Katie Kelly
