Bloomingdale Public Schools
Community Newsletter - End of Year June 2022
Superintendent's Update
On behalf of our entire staff here in Bloomingdale, I would like to extend a large thank you to every member of our learning community who supported us during the 2021-2022 school year. There is no denying that it took a ton of hard work, adjustments and perseverance. However, as a collective group we all worked together to rise above the latest stage of the pandemic and ensure our students were receiving the rich, high level of academic experiences that they deserve. Thank you.
Included in this newsletter are a number of items to be on the lookout for this summer. This summer will not be a quiet one in our schools - below is a list of items taking place within our buildings:
- SRD will host the ESY program for the district during the month of July.
- WTB will host our summer academies program during the month of July.
- MBD will host the Safety Town Program at the end of June.
- SRD & MBD will see construction take place outdoors with the beginning stages of new playground installation.
- MBD, SRD and WTB classrooms will all undergo technology upgrades. Rooms will be outfitted with new Promethean boards, white boards and audio equipment.
- WTB will undergo refurbishment of our 50 year old science labs during the months of July & August.
- MBD will be transformed to house our exploding (good thing!) preschool program. Office space is being renovated during July & August to return classrooms to their original purpose.
- WTB will begin construction of the Think Center based on their successful grant application (more information below!)
- All schools will undergo security upgrades going into the 2022-2023 school year. More information on these upgrades will come out in our summer newsletter.
As you can see, it will certainly be a busy time in Bloomingdale this summer! Our administrative team and assistants work throughout the summer so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact our schools.
Best,
Dr. Nicosia
District News & Updates
Teachers, Schedules, Etc. For 2022-2023
Naturally, with one school year ending, the focus shifts to the next school year. Planning for next school year has been underway for months now and the final touches are being put on student schedules, homeroom assignments and classroom locations.
As we have done in the past, all of this information will become available in mid-August via the Genesis Parent Portal. Please be on the look out for a School Messenger email around August 1st which will announce the specific dates that the portal will open. Until that time, you will notice that the portal will have limited information as it will be placed in summer maintenance mode.
For our 8th grade parents moving on to Butler High School, your Bloomingdale portal will become inactive on or about July 15th. Butler already sent out information about gaining access to their Genesis Parent Portal, which you will use to access their system moving forward.
For all our new families, new portal access will be granted on or about August 1st in anticipation of the opening of the portal with next year assignments.
Summer At-Home Academics
- Reflex Math - Designed for students entering grades 2-5 next year, Reflex Math allows for fact fluency practice. Reflex is the most effective system for mastering basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Full of games that students love, Reflex takes students at every level and helps them quickly gain math fact fluency and confidence.
- FRAX Math - Designed for students entering grades 2-8 next year, like Reflex Math, FRAX is game-based, it uses the latest research-based instructional methods to create a better way to learn fractions. With Frax, students come to understand that fractions are numbers too. The fun challenges, personalized instruction, and motivating rewards help students build their skills and understanding – all while exploring the galaxy with fractions!

2022-2023 Calendar
Attached below is the final 2022-2023 school calendar. The final version was approved by the Board of Education at the May 25, 2022 meeting. The calendar can always be found on the district website.
Please note that our first day of school is Tuesday, September 6, 2022.
Upcoming Board of Education Meeting
Dr. Nicosia's report for this month will include a presentation on district goals leading into the 2022-2023 school year.
Congratulations to the PTA
The PTA was also instrumental in helping the district raise funds for new playgrounds at MBD and SRD. While the district will fund the construction at both sites, the PTA was able to enhance the design to truly allow for great experiences for our students. Through their incentive program, students and families raised enough funds to 'Pie a Staff Member'.
Below is a video for all our families of Dr. Nicosia taking a pie in the face! Thank you to our staff that participate and all our families that supported this fundraiser.
NEW WTB Think Center coming Fall 2022!
Through this funding, technology education will be transformed at WTB. Construction on the Think Center will take place this summer with a planned opening in September, 2022. Through the Think Center, we hope to accomplish the following objectives:
To introduce coding and computer skills to our students as part of our natural progress to Butler High School;
The integration of authentic learning tasks tied to curricula that allow students the opportunity to create solutions using classroom lessons as their foundation thus bringing content into relevance;
The integration of a selection of elective programs offered to meet students needs and/or desires;
To provide our students with the opportunity for Problem-Based Learning, and the connection of learning goals between the subject areas in order to bridge outcomes allowing our students to understand how learning is continuous and related.
