SEL in Action at Home
December 2021 - Kindness
Did you know that teaching kindness to children is part of the fourth National Health Education Standards: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communications skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks? Learning to be kind helps build a positive learning environment in the classroom and the home. Scientific studies prove that kindness has many physical, emotional, and mental health benefits like building self-esteem, increased energy, increased serotonin (the feel-good hormone), and oxytocin (the love hormone)! What's more, kindness decreases pain, stress, and anxiety.
In our last newsletter for 2021, we explore how families can help support emotional intelligence through:
- kindness conversations
- journaling and
- a whole month's worth of kindness ideas
Thank you so much for your resilience this year, and we appreciate your commitment to embracing kindness as a permanent lifestyle, not just THIS year but EVERY year!
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING QUICK LINKS
Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK)
According to the RAOK Foundation, respect is a great way to show kindness at home! Respect means treating people, places, and things with kindness. Families learn how to show more respect to themselves because we can't respect others until we first respect ourselves. Then, talk about how to better respect others, even our siblings! What are some ways to show respect?
- Use their name
- Express sincere gratitude
- Do more listening than talking
- Talk more about them than about you
- Be authentically interested
- Be sincere in your praise
- Show you care
