Help provide the gift of support for our families
President's Message: A Holiday Challenge to help over 100 families that need financial support each summer
During this season of Thanksgiving, I often try to take some time of quiet reflection to think about all the blessings in my life. Since 2013, that process has included reflecting on camp and what it means to my family. I remember vividly driving into camp that first year and being immediately put at ease as dozens of energetic tutu-wearing counselors welcomed us and made my son feel right at home. I also remember pick-up that first year: watching Theo say goodbye to his new friends, watching them perform “the World’s Greatest” and hearing Tricia challenge them to “do something out of your comfort zone this year and then come back and tell me all about it!”
For many of our kids, Camp is like home. It is a safe place where they can just be themselves. Where they can talk to other kids who “get it” in a judgment-free and supportive environment. One of the blessings of being on the Board is that I get to witness, firsthand, all that goes into making Camp so special and I’d like to take a moment to tell you about our wonderfully talented, dedicated volunteer counselors. These young adults come from all over the country and from around the world. They apply to be a part of camp each year, attend on-line training and meetings over the winter, pay their own way to camp, and have the energy and excitement to inspire our kids throughout camp. And as it that wasn’t enough, these guys are raising money to provide scholarship support so no camper is turned away. Last year 143 children and teens attended Camp, and approximately 80% of the campers received some form of scholarship support. During Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month 2017, our volunteer counselors raised over $16,000 - that’s enough to provide 16 full scholarships to camp!
I would invite you to reflect on what Camp has meant to your child. Has he or she been inspired by one of their counselors? Are they already counting down to camp 2018? Are they challenging themselves more? And if you are so moved, I would invite you to do what I am doing today – I am emailing my friends, family, and co-workers and posting to Facebook to let everyone know how much Camp means to me to ask them for a donation. We’ve made it easy by creating our 1st Annual Holiday Heroes CAMPaign linked below – people can also visit our website homepage and donate online. Please consider making a donation today and please consider challenging others to do the same. Together we can insure that Camp is open to all.
With gratitude,
Justin LeBlanc
President of the Board
