Can you believe we are halfway through the first grading period?
It’s Time to Check Your Child’s Progress!
If you are new to Crown Point Community Schools, take a few minutes about watch this video about accessing BUZZ. This is our learning management system. Students work within the Buzz space, and teachers record grades here as well. You can view the resource here: Parent Buzz Demonstration.
Kindergarten Parents:
Teachers have completed midterm progress reports that will be sent home with students. These reports indicate performance in work habits, social skills, and fine motor skills. Using the information reported and determining if your child is on track, try setting some goals for the next month of school.
First and Second Grade Parents:
Check your child’s mid-term progress by logging into RDS Parent Access and go to the Buzz gradebook. Watch the 4 minute 18 second video for directions on Midterm Progress Using The Buzz Gradebook. You can view the resource here: Mid-Term Progress Check.
After viewing your child's progress, determine which goals you'd like to set together for the next month of school.
If you have concerns about your child's performance, do not wait until Parent Teacher Conferences in the end of October. Contact your child's teacher now and work together to create a plan to support your student. Partnerships=Progress!

Reading Connection
Counselor's Corner, Mrs. Williams
We completed our first week of small group sessions. This is the first of many that will be held throughout the year for students. As a school counselor, I serve students in a multitude of ways: one on one, classroom instruction, and small group counseling.
Small groups are very beneficial, because it allows me to maximize my time in being able to reach more students at once. More importantly, students benefit multiple ways from small group counseling. Here are a few examples:
- It gives students the opportunity to see that they are not alone, that there are other students who are experiencing the same thing as them.
- Small groups are a great way for friendships to evolve and advance social skills through group discussions.
- Creates a sense of support and teamwork, not only while the group is meeting, but it’s effects are ongoing even after the group has concluded.
- Builds confidence in students through sharing and collaborating with their peers, that can be carried into the classroom setting.
- Develops problem solving strategies for students to become effective at self-regulating their emotions and handling tough situations.

Positive Behavior Coach, Mrs. Adams
Hello, Winfield families!
This week in our fun world of PBIS, I had the wonderful opportunity to read our bucket-filler books to ALL 22 classes. Our Kindergartners, having listened to Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud, learned the importance of the bucket-filling concept and then discussed ways in which to fill others' buckets, and also, examples of dipping into others' buckets and how to avoid that. Our 1st and 2nd graders recapped their bucket knowledge by listening to How Full Is Your Bucket? by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. I was amazed how insightful these students are regarding this concept, and how they were so willing to share various bucket-filling ideas and stories. All students grasped the concept and agreed to become and/or remain bucket fillers FOR LIFE!
Next week I begin Second Step lessons for each classroom in K-2. We want your child to be as successful as possible at school, and part of this success lies in knowing how to get along with others. We will use this Second Step program in your child's classroom to teach these critical skills. The program teaches skills in the following four areas: Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, and Problem Solving. Your child will be learning a lot this year, and he or she will need your help! Throughout the year, your child will be bringing home Home Links that go with several of the Second Step lessons. Home Links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete together. They are a great way for you to understand what your child is learning and for your child to show you what he or she knows. If you have any questions about the Second Step program, please contact me, or for additional information, visit www.secondstep.org.

Vegetable Of The Month
The vegetable of the month for September is the radish. Radishes are an edible root vegetable. In addition to being heart healthy, radishes are high in fiber and help increase oxygen to the blood supply. We will be offering a sample during the month of September for all our students who wish to try it during lunch.

Safety and Security
- Make sure the school has updated Emergency Contacts within RDS. Do we have the best numbers to reach you? There should always be additional individuals who don't live with you that we can contact in the event of an emergency.
- Designate an emergency "go-to" place for your child. For example, who is the neighbor they'd go to in the event someone weren't home? Who is the back up for that person?
- Help your child learn your phone number and to use a telephone. Students should memorize your #1 contact phone number. Students should also know how to dial and connect with someone in an emergency, including the ability to dial 911.
Having a proactive plan will ensure everyone feels safe and calm in an unforeseen situation!
