Lauren Sharpe: The teachers

What is one piece of advice you can give to the 6th and 7th graders?
Brooklyn Wiltzuis Cherish the moments because middle school is going to go by really fast. Your memories that you make in middle school will stick with you for the rest of your life!! Appreciate every single one of them!
Karissa Brower: Don't annoy your teachers.
Aleicea Avina: Be kind to your teachers and turn in assignments when they are due.
Katherine Navarro: Try your best, even if your best doesn't seem like it, FOCUS ON WORK! It will become more difficult, but time goes by fast.
Lucas Harvey: Can you imagine what you would do if you could do all you can?
Michelle Olmedo: One piece of advice I can give to 6 and 7th grade is always be yourself, and don't let the bad or hard things get in your way to give up.
Annie Yang: Don’t let negativity get to you because you are way stronger and more capable than you may think you are.
Nick Lieffring: Find what you are destined to do.
Slater Gutierrez: Don’t back down from a challenge; it could lead to greatness.
Caleb Bekkum: Don’t worry too much.
Big Changes Happening Next Year
Have you ever heard your parents tell you to finish your breakfast? Well they're not wrong, in fact KidsHealth states that “Skipping Breakfast can make kids feel tired, restless or irritable.” Kids need to eat breakfast to refuel and start off the day. It’s a proven fact.
New to Farnsworth next school year will be the new Advisory time and breakfast. Advisory will now be your first class of the day and free breakfast will be served in Advisory from 7:40-8:03 am. If you do not want to eat the breakfast right away, you take it and eat it later at snack time. Judi Smith, District Coordinator of School Nutrition states, “The School Nutrition Department can offer a universal free breakfast program if over 60% of the students participate. This federal program is under the National School Breakfast program, and the intent is to provide all students the fuel they need for academic achievement. Many students are up early and just do not feel like eating right away. This second chance at nourishment fills a critical need.”
Another change for next year, is that Advisory teachers will remain the same. This means that the new 6th graders will have an eighth grade teacher for Advisory. Current 6th and 7th graders will remain with their Advisory teacher next year. During the new breakfast time it will be of utmost importance that students clean up after themselves. Have a wonderful summer and look forward to the changes in schedule!
Librarian's Corner: Books on Bike are Back!
By: Amanda Staron
Coming to a park near you: free books! The librarians from the school district will be biking to city parks again this summer to give away free books and freeze pops.
You can check our web site at booksonbikessheboygan.org to find out which parks we’ll be visiting on which days. We’re usually out from 11am to 1pm once a week. We’ll be on the south side (King, Roosevelt, and Optimist Parks) on June 28 and August 1, weather permitting. Look for bright orange bikes pulling trailers, and when you see us, don’t be shy -- come on over and get free loot! You can enjoy a refreshing ice pop and search through our trailers to find a book you’ll love.
Reading a great book is a perfect way to spend a lazy summer afternoon. Reading even just a book or two over summer will help you keep your skills sharp so you can start school next fall at the top of your game.
Sheboygan Rocks
Sheboygan rocks is all year round rock scavenger hunt. The goal is to find as many painted rocks around Sheboygan and Sheboygan Falls as you can. It is a free and very fun thing to do on a nice summer day! You can post the rocks you find on the Sheboygan Rocks Facebook page and maybe see if other people have found a few rocks you have made. Here's how participate:
Paint rocks you find and hide them at a local park or public place
Look for other rocks and post them on their Facebook page
Rehide the rocks you find so people can keep looking for them
Hope you join the hunt!
Book Review: Children of Blood and Bone
By: Abby Wetzel
Despite its somewhat creepy title, Children Of Blood And Bone is an amazing fantasy novel that will make you wish magic was real. It this adventure written by Tomi Adeyemi, you follow Zelie, a teenager with pure white hair, a sign that she was blessed by the gods. However, in the kingdom of Orisha, Zelie’s home, the king thinks that the gods are a threat, because those with the white hair are not only blessed by the gods, they are blessed with magic. You can follow Zelie on her quest to restore the magic when you read Children Of Blood And Bone.
Crazy Conspiracy Theories of the Ludacris Interwebs
Welcome to the internet, a place full of lies or what could be truths. Nobody knows. Enjoy 6 crazy conspiracy theories found on the weirdness of the interwebs.
1. J.K. Rowling did not write the Harry Potter books
‘The world of magic and Harry Potter wanted the world to know they existed, so they wrote books about the more famous of the witches and wizards. They only used J.K. Rowling as a front. How Is it possible that a person can write seven thick books that are translated into 55 languages and sell more than 250 million copies in less than 10 years?’ Wow, I am literally hitting my face right now.
2. Finland does not exist
This theory evolved on Reddit in 2015, when a user called "Raregans" suggested that Finland was a fabricated landmass, dreamed up by the Japanese and Soviet Union during the Cold War in an effort to secure fishing rights in the Baltic Sea. This is just sad. I feel bad for Finland now.
3. Queen Elizabeth is a cannibal
I think this one explains itself. Ever wondered how the queen of England has managed to live so long? This wacky guy named Hubert Humdinger “has the answer”: "She must eat human flesh to be so vivacious." This man reports that a serviceman at the castle claimed to discover human remains inside the queen's "private freezer."
I am never going to the England now. Ever.
4. The Earth is flat
We have all heard it before. Don’t fall for it. That’s all I have to say.
5. The Israeli government has a pack of evil, GPS-equipped sharks that they use against their enemies.
After many shark attacks in Egypt, some people like to blame it on Israel. They believe the sharks were sent there with GPS system with their master plan. How nice of them.
6. Robert Kardashian and Ted Cruz are the same person!
I like this one! Some people like to believe that Robert faked his death and changed his identity to Ted Cruz to enjoy his life without having to deal with all the women in his family.
In the Know with the Farnsworth SRO!
I want to start by thanking all the student body and staff members of Farnsworth Middle School for making my first year as a School Resource Officer outstanding.
As we head into summer vacation please remember to be safe during summer activities.
While swimming in Lake Michigan, it is essential to be aware of the dangers of currents. According to the Coast Guard, since 2002, Lake Michigan had 82 fatalities and at least 243 rescues that were current-related. Lake Michigan has the highest number of total incidents of all the Great Lakes with 199 more incidents than all of the other lakes combined.
To keep you safe, here are some tips for avoiding, recognizing and escaping currents:
Before swimming
• Look for changes in water color, water motion, or channels of churning or choppy water.
• Learn how to swim, never swim alone and check for warning flags that indicated hazards.
• If there is any doubt that a current is present, do not enter the water.
Remember: If in doubt, don’t go out.
Escaping a current
• Conserve energy by staying calm, swim parallel to the shoreline and once you are out, swim toward the shore.
• If you are unable to escape, try to float or tread water until the current subsides and wave your arms to draw attention to yourself.
To assist someone
• If a lifeguard isn’t present call 911and throw the victim a floating item.
• Do not enter the water and become a victim yourself.
Have a safe and fun summer!
