Tigers Social Emotional Learning
Issue 1.01
What is Social Emotional Learning??
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is critical in developing the skills students need to achieve academic success. CASEL (Collaborative for Academic Social Emotional Learning) describes five core areas students should acquire in order to experience academic success. These areas include: self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. Throughout Professional Development, whole group classroom lessons and classroom implementation, Raleigh Park educators have been working hard to provide students with Social Emotional Learning.

Components of Social Emotional Learning at Raleigh Park
Self-Awareness
Raleigh Park has implemented the Zones of Regulation. Each classroom has learned about the different "zones" their emotions fit into. This relates to how their body responds to the demands in their environment. Students have learned how their brains function when they are in these zones.
Self-Management
Students are learning skills to regulate their bodies when in the different zones. Skills such as breathing, taking a break, looking at the size of the problem and talking with someone. Students continue working on these skills and will gain more strategies as the year progresses.
Social Awareness
Classrooms have implemented Restorative Circles. This technique provides an opportunity for all students to have an equal voice and hear others' perspectives. These circles assist in developing empathy and compassion for others.
Relationship Skills
Raleigh Park is implementing Restorative Practices, which provides students with an opportunity to resolve conflict and restore relationships with peers or staff members. Students continue to learn how to look at a situation through another's perspective and take responsibility for their actions.
Responsible Decision Making
In learning about emotions (Zones of Regulation) and strategies to regulate, students work hard to regulate their bodies which will lead to making responsible decisions. Classrooms have been implementing Calming Corners for students to regulate within the classroom. Once regulated, students will return to class and have the ability to make responsible decisions.
