Love is a Many Splendored Thing
I'm very excited that painter Leslie Peck will be showing some of her romance novel covers in the Community Room this month. Those familiar with her more recent work may be surprised to learn that she once had a steady gig painting models like Fabio. (Be still my beating heart!) A close look at the flowing hair and draping fabrics shows the amazing technique that makes her still lifes, landscapes and portraits so in demand today.
Speaking of love, we have been amazed and humbled by your response to our 2017-2018 annual appeal. In the fall, as we were making plans for this year's appeal, an anonymous donor made a $10,000 matching challenge. Yikes! That was 40% more than we had ever raised and I wasn't sure we could do it. But the money came in. Ten dollars, twenty five dollars, five hundred dollars, it began to add up. In December, a patron read our appeal letter and said, "Let me know if you fall short on your part of the match and I'll make it up." I was nearly in tears at the circulation desk. As we wrap up this campaign, I am thrilled to announce that we raised a total of $20,000!
We're happy when you show us how you feel by writing a check but there are also scores of volunteers who show their love through work. From the Friends book sale and the IVH Gill local history archive in the basement to the circulation desk on the ground floor to the gardens outside, the love of our volunteers makes this whole library circus possible. And just when I think I've seen it all when it comes to devotion, they top it. Last Sunday, I was in catching up on stuff and looked out my office window to find a desk volunteer in the parking lot shoveling! To show that their love is not unrequited, we're throwing our annual volunteer party this month. If you're a volunteer who hasn't yet gotten your invitation, forgive us and come anyway.
February is also Black History Month and you know how we love history! Our own Cliff Oliver will be giving us a glimpse of the rich legacy of local black residents. There will also be a screening of the widely acclaimed Oscar nominated film I Am Not Your Negro. Both events are sponsored by the Willard's Mountain DAR.
Do you love your library? In February, we'll be giving you even more chances to show it. (Don't worry, they're free and you won't have to break a sweat.) Check out all the great events going on this month and come down to see us.

ps We are planning some fun activities for school vacation week. Details to come.
