Pilgrim Lutheran School News

March 18, 2016

A couple things about next week...

As Christians around the world commemorate Holy Week, Pilgrim has also planned some special events. The Pre-Kindergarten 3 and 4-year-old classes and Kindergarten class are presenting A Bedbug Passion Play on Wednesday, March 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary. All are welcome to attend.

We are also moving our normal Wednesday Chapel Service to Thursday morning, March 24, at 10 a.m. The Thursday morning service will be a communion service to remind us of the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. The service also features a reprise of the Bedbug and some testimonies from our Wednesday afterschool service group that is focused on teaching our students how to start and do service to our global community. We hope that those who are able will join us.

Countdown to Spring Break...there is no school on Friday, March 25th. Friday, the office will close at 11:30 AM. Spring Break officially begins at close of school on Thursday! During the week of break, March 28th - April 1st, the church and school offices will have shortened hours. Someone will be in the building every day between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. All staff will be checking emails and messages throughout the week, and we promise to respond within 48 hours. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

This week's recap...

Pilgrim kids enjoyed a great week of learning and field trips this week. Many thanks to the Pilgrim PTL for their sponsorship of an in-house field trip that featured the Yale Exit Players, a group of students from Yale University who presented an improv comedy performance for the whole school and then classroom workshops for the upper grade students. This was a great interactive afternoon of theatre for all of our students. Thanks, too, to all of our parents who contributed to this in-house field trip. In addition to the Yale Exit Players, students from Mrs. Cardo’s and Mrs. Andreen’s homerooms attended a performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, after having studied the play in class. The students very much enjoyed the music and action of the play.

Students from Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten are attending a performance of Henry and Mudge. Regular theatre attendance is a great way for all kids to learn about literature. Again, thanks for your support of these trips.

Or Spring Dine-Out for Pilgrim Event. On Tuesday, March 15, at Chicago Pizza was a great success! The owner of Chicago Pizza has already presented the Pilgrim PTL with a check for $1,028. That’s a lot of pizza!!! Thanks to all of our Pilgrim families and their friends for patronizing Chicago Pizza. PTL is planning to invest part of this money in some Chrome Books. What a great end result!

Do Good For Good Friday!

Next week, students from Pilgrim's World Service Station after school club will be sharing what they learned this semester during Thursday's chapel service.

Following these presentations, on Thursday March 24th from 2:45 to 3:30 pm, the club will be holding a fundraiser in the back play lot. All proceeds from this event will go towards Girls Supporting Girls India School Project. Girls Supporting Girls builds schools in developing countries and works to raise awareness of the need for better educational opportunities for children worldwide.

Pre-Registration for 2016-2017

Pre-registration for grades 1-8 is due Monday, April 4th. That's the Monday we return from Spring Break! Please get your forms in ASAP.

Pre-registration letters for 2016-2017 is well underway and we are working hard to fill seats, especially those in our Early Childhood Programs for 3-,4- and 5-year-olds.

1. If you have not received a Pre-registration packet, please contact Halley Williams in the School Office.

2. If you know of a family looking for an Early Childhood Program for a 3-,4-, or 5-year-old, please have them come for a Tuesday morning tour.

3. If you know that your family will not be returning to Pilgrim for 2016-2017, please let me know.

Transitions are natural in school communities and we all understand that. An accurate count of returning students helps Pilgrim leaders plan budget and staffing needs for the coming school year. Thanks for your help by letting us know your plans.

Please note if you are the parent of a 3-year-old or know someone interested in the 3-year-old class for the 2016-2017 school year: after much discussion, we are making spots available to 3-year-olds in the morning class, but unfortunately, we will not be able to offer an all-day option for these 3-year-olds, due to space and room limitations. We are also inviting parents of children who are eligible for the 4-year-old class in 2016-2017 to consider the option of sending your child to the afternoon class for 2016-2017. Our Early Childhood staff truly believe that a mixed 3- and 4-year-old class both in the morning and in the afternoon is going to be a stronger learning environment for all the children.
