Tumbleweed Times Week 20

News from Ranch 25 - January 29, 2016

First Grade Happenings

In social studies we read about Chinese New Year, which will begin on February 8th of this year. It is the year of the monkey. We read that on New Year's Eve, people open doors and windows to let the old year out and the new year in. People also celebrate by having a special meal with their family, setting off firecrackers, and watching parades with dragon or lion dancers.

In math this week we finished our study of measurement by comparing the length of objects using the same measuring tool, and by comparing the same object using different measuring tools. It has been a fun two weeks of measuring. You can read more about this week's lessons at the following link: Math News: Grade 1, Module 3, Topic C.

Digital Dash - GO Baldwin's Bucking Broncos!!

The Foundation fundraiser Digital Dash will be held on Friday, February 5th at 9:45 AM. Students will run to raise money for our Discovery Labs. Information regarding the Digital Dash went home last week in the Friday Folder. You also received a very detailed email from our Room Mom, Michelle Bailey. Here are some reminders:

  1. Students will wear a class shirt provided by our Room Moms.
  2. Make sure your child has applied sunscreen before school and has a hat available, if desired.
  3. Running or athletic shoes are a MUST!
  4. Bring a water bottle with your child's name on it.
  5. Siblings are not allowed for safety reasons.

Be sure to get your pledge sheets back to school by Monday, February 1st. You can also pledge online (preferred by the Foundation) at this link: Digital Dash 6.0. Volunteers will be needed to mark wristbands as students run by our table. If you are able to come, please contact a Room Mom or send an email to me (which I will be happy to forward).

President Reports

In today's Friday Folder you will find a blue paper explaining our upcoming Presidents' Reports. This fun oral presentation is a great way to learn about and share some facts about some of our United States presidents. Each student had an opportunity to choose a president to learn about. Please help your child by either looking on the internet or checking out a book from the library to find facts which will answer the questions in the Friday Folder. Below are listed a couple of safe websites:

Fun Facts on the U.S. Presidents for Kids

Biographies of U.S. Presidents

Reports will be shared on Friday, February 12th.

Valentine's Exchange

We will be having a Valentine's Exchange on Friday, February 12th. This is not a party, so we will not need volunteers. Students can make or purchase valentines to pass out to their classmates. Students should address each Valentine with a classmate's name. It is great writing and reading practice, and makes sure no one is forgotten. We will decorate a bag at school to hold all our Valentines and to carry them home. In accordance with our school wellness policy, please do not attached candy or any other edible item to the Valentines. A class list is pictured below. Let me know if you need a printed copy. I can send it via email.
