SHISD Mid-Week Message
Promoting Great Things in a Great School District
Team Work
Panther Nation,
Wow! What a great week of weather we are having so far. Should have waited on Spring Break. This week I want to highlight the concept of Team Work and share an example of how a group of SHISD staff sacrificed and worked together for our students.
Going into Spring Break, SHISD Band Director Randy Kiser was in a jam. The band was supposed to compete in UIL in Gladewater ISD but the weather was bad and SHISD had a delayed start. Early that morning, Mr. Kiser received a phone call from the UIL Region 4 Executive Secretary (who organizes all of the UIL contests for our region) informing him that the original site for concert contest (Gladewater) was closed, and that several of the bands had to back out due to weather. He was working on moving concert contest to another school, but if that couldn't happen, all of the remaining bands would have to wait until April 1st to play. Soon after, he received another call stating that the second site was unable to hold the contest as well.
Mr. Kiser and the band were ready to compete, as were other bands, they just need a site that was available. Mr. Kiser called Cathy Reed to ask if there was any way he could use the Intermediate and Jr. High campuses for the event. The L. L. Williamson auditorium was already reserved and set up for the Texas Day concert, a major event at SHIS. Cathy called Mrs. Doron to see if there was any way to host the event.
Without hesitation, Principal Doron welcomed the contest to her school. Mr. Kiser arrived at SHIS around 9:30am to see how many students he would need to rearrange the stage. To his surprise, Mrs. Doron and her staff were already moving equipment and clearing the stage. He jumped in to help and the stage was ready. Mr. Kiser then went to the high school and met with a few of the kids and told them what the plan was. Without hesitation, they immediately started stacking chairs and stands and filling in the rest of the band as they arrived. By 10:40 the students had the auditorium set up. Mr. Perry and Mr. Pipak had the JH band hall ready to be the sight reading room.
Having taken all of our percussion equipment to Gladewater to make loading and travel easier for the contest, Mr. Kiser had to get a trailer and go over to Gladewater to bring it back to Spring Hill. When he arrived, the Gladewater directors helped load the truck and trailer (thanks Chris Clifton, Mitchell Smith and Jeff Smith). The directors got back to the school, unloaded and began the contest.
Icing on the Cake is that both of the Spring Hill bands received straight 1st division ratings in concert and sight reading. The teamwork of the Spring Hill staff also helped several other bands fulfill their wishes of performing their concert contest music on the regularly scheduled day.
From Mr. Kiser – “A huge thank you to all involved in making the day’s contest happen in Spring Hill, especially our students-the real heroes. I assure you, the organization and assistance I saw that day does not happen anywhere else.”
Sometimes the difference between success and failure is a great team. On this day, the great staff of SHISD pulled together to make it happen. I want to thank the leadership provided by Mr. Kiser, Principal Doron, and Principal Parker and their team for your shining example of teamwork and Panther hospitality! You are the best.
