A little something about the perch
Perch are fish that are most commonly found in small ponds, lakes, streams, or rivers. They are relatively small in size but yet very fast and stealthy due to their fins. These fish are very sought-after by fisherman for a whole variety of things such as food or even competitions. The general body type of a perch is somewhat long and rounded. The perch can usually reach to roughly about to the size of 18 inches. They are mostly found towards the north of the USA. the largest ever caught was measured at 4 lb. 14 oz. and was measured at 24 inches. These are great fish and they are great to our environment.
Prey and Predators
Almost every cool to warm water predatory fish species, such as the northern pike, muskellunge, bass, sunfish, crappie, walleye, lake trout, and even fellow perch are predators to the perch. For food they can eat each other, smaller fish, shellfish, or insect larvae, but can be caught with nearly any bait.
A visual of a Perch before dissection
This is what a perch would look like but this perch has been preserved. if you were to find this fish in the ocean you would notice how fast the fish is swimming due to the way that the body is built.
During dissection
The perch is very organized but it is very messy when it is being dissected because the stomach takes up much of the area preventing us to really see everything there.
Eyes on you
In this picture i was able to take out the Perch's eye and physically touch it. The eye is hard but yet very smooth.
The Circulatory System
The circulatory system of the perch is a typical low pressure single type system in which the heart is a single pump and there is a single circuit of blood flow. The heart is pumped through the body towards the gills and that's where the blood actually gets oxygenated. With that being said, until the blood reaches the gills the blood is deoxygenated. The blood then returns back to the heart for another round!
Circulatory System
Here is a diagram of what the circulatory system looks like. There are many components to this system and the fish is well off and healthy.
Circulatory system
The perch is a very complex fish, but the fish has a great circulatory system that pumps blood throughout the whole body allowing the fish to get enough energy.
