We were fortunate to have Mandy and Chrystal, knowledge-keepers from Tyendinaga, visiting our school again this week. Last year, Mandy and Chrystal worked with a number of teachers to deepen their understanding of Indigenous culture. This week, they visited a number of Primary Classrooms and shared their Haudenasaunee culture with students, including teaching them about wampum, clans, animals, respecting our Earth and being good and solid in our intentions with each other, as well as traditional dances and songs.
Niá:wen, Mandy and Chrystal! We look forward to welcoming you to our school again soon.
Wonderful learning this week was demonstrated by students in M Jacques' class, who explored the creations and techniques of "The Group of Seven": students learned about the style of this group of painters, and then found photographs depicting beautiful scenic views. Students then sketched the scenes, used pastel to add colour, and then repeated the same technique using watercolours. Mme Fox's students were also exploring a challenging visual arts task: using curved and straight lines to create a 3-Dimensional optical illusion...with a Valentine's Day theme :)
The results in both classes: masterpieces!! We can't wait to see the student work proudly displayed in our hallways.
Students in Mme Creighton's class explored a new selection of books in an exciting way: they had a "goûter de livres" (book-tasting!). Students had a few minutes to explore the books on their table. They wrote down the titles that piqued their interest, and will read each text in its entirety over the next few weeks. This was a 'novel' way to allow the students to check out a large number of new books in a short period of time -- bravo, Mme Creighton!
Today is the last day to purchase tickets for the February 21st "Henderson at the Fronts Night!" Tickets may be purchased online at http://bit.ly/jrhps2020 until February 14th. Each family who purchases tickets will be entered into a draw for some fun Kingston Frontenacs spirit wear -- we have some great scarves and hats to give away and will draw names next week so that the lucky winners can wear their new Fronts gear to the game!
A reminder to all families to register and create a "School Day" account for your child/ren. We will be doing a draw for more prizes for families who register by February 14th (including gift certificates for Cineplex, Mastermind, Indigo and a variety of local restaurants) as well as treating the first three classes with 100% registration to pizza parties! Detailed information about School Day Permissions and Payment can be found below, and don't hesitate to contact the school should you have any questions. We will be doing draws for door prizes next week and will announce the winners in the next Weekly Update.
Don't forget that Family Day is on Monday: there is no school that day. Have a safe and relaxing long weekend,
Mme Peart and Mrs. Davey
Sign up for School-Day: Permissions & Payments!
James R. Henderson Public School is excited to offer our families a new secure portal to complete permissions and payments online. With School-Day: Permissions & Payments, you will be able to complete permission forms and payments from any web browser using your SmartPhone, tablet, laptop or desktop.
Through this new online portal, you will be able to pay for items such as:
· Field trips
· Sporting events
· Student cards/athletic fees
· Hot lunch (where applicable)
The new easy-to-use portal will remove the risks associated with sending money to school with students, the frustration of lost or missing permission forms, and significantly reduce the amount of paper our school consumes.
You can sign up for a School-Day account at www.school-day.com and connect to your child’s events and activities.
With your support, we look forward to a successful implementation of this practical application!
