The Buzz at Westbrook School

December 22, 2022

From the Principal...

Dear Westbrook Families,

Westbrook students and staff were thrilled to see the Lincoln Show Choir perform on Wednesday, December 20th at Westbrook. It was wonderful to see former Westbrook students shine on stage. Thank you to Ms. Thomas for organizing this fun event for Lincoln and Westbrook students.

Our last school day this month will be Thursday, December 22nd. I wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday break. I hope you have time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. We look forward to seeing our students and continuing our work together in the new year on Monday, January 9th.

For your children,

Danielle Crandall

Upcoming PEPS Meeting

The next PEPS meeting is Tuesday, January 10th from 10:00-11:00AM at Lions Park.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with PEPS, this is a district wide networking group for D57 parents of children with special needs. PEPS stands for Partnering with Educators and Parents to Support student needs. At our meetings we will support each other by sharing our experiences, discussing topics of interest and addressing questions and concerns. We will gather information from other parents and/or professionals so that we can better support our children in their education and community. Here is a link with more specific information about this month’s meeting as well as the remaining dates for future meetings this school year.

We hope to see you there!

Kindness Club UPDATE!

Our first 4 week session of Kindness Club was a HUGE success!

Our kind students:

  • wrote letters and created pictures for doctors and patients in the hospital,
  • organized a coat drive for community members in need, AND
  • made Kind t-shirts to spread awareness!

We are so proud of ALL the kind children we have at Westbrook School!

Recognize a Staff Member

Westbrook teachers and staff work hard to support students and staff daily. We invite you to complete the google form if you would like to recognize a staff member or team for their hard work and dedication. We will pass on the good news to them. Thank you in advance for sending an encouraging word, as we know it will mean so much to them.

Safety Reminders

  • Please park your car and walk your students across the bus lane for arrival. Please do NOT allow your students to walk in the parking lot unaccompanied.

  • Please ensure you use the crosswalk in the parking lot walking to and from Westbrook.

  • Please do not walk between the buses. Staff members will be in front of the school each morning, reminding families to only cross at the crosswalk.

  • Please do not bring dogs or animals onto school property. Many of our students are frightened of dogs.

  • Please contact the classroom teacher if you have a friend or family member picking up your child. Please communicate to the adult which door your child is dismissed from.

Thank you so much for your support of safety at Westbrook!

Recess Reminders

Dress for Outdoor Weather

As the weather turns cooler, please ensure your children are dressed to go out for recess. Unless it is raining or the temperature / wind chill is too cold (15 degrees or below, real-feel temperature), the students will go out every day for recess. Please write your student’s last name on a tag for all belongings (coat, boots, snowpants, etc.) We already have a lot of coats and sweatshirts in the lost and found.

Items from Home

As a reminder, students can bring small items from home to play with during indoor recess. However, we do not want students to lose, trade, or break valuable items. As we head into the new year, we encourage parents to check in with their students regarding the things they bring to school.

Notes from the Nurse

Please keep your child home if they have a fever, have vomited, and/or have diarrhea. Your child may return to school once they have been fever free (without fever reducing medication), vomit free, and/or diarrhea free for 24 hours. Please reach out to your pediatrician if your child is sick and you have any concerns.

Please report all absences to the school by using the attendance line, the absence notification form or by emailing the teacher and / or the office.

Warm Regards,

Julie Tworek, RN
