KRA in MI Team Newsletter

August, 2021

Washtenaw ISD is an educational service agency managing the logistics and training support for the MKEO/KRA mandate for the state of Michigan. As such, WISD is not responsible for enforcing or monitoring this mandate. We will not be answering questions regarding the mandate. For mandate questions, please contact the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).

Our team has created this newsletter to be one source of information on the KRA but it is only a snapshot of where we are at in our planning and progress upon sending. For the most up-to-date information, please be sure to visit our new website!

  • KRA 2021 Training Facilitator Guide

Trainer Refresher Resources

If you are a KRA trainer that was trained prior to this year, you need to watch the recording of the June 2 Refresher Training for Trainers or complete the refresher module on the Trainer PD site. The final step is to complete the KRA 2021 Recertification Content Assessment prior to any teacher trainings with an 80% or higher.

Teacher Resources

Teachers who have not previously administered the KRA must complete the initial KRA Training with their district. Your district trainer will communicate expectations on how to become certified.

Teachers who have previously administered the KRA must be recertified to administer the assessment. Teachers can either participate in a synchronous Teacher Refresher training with the KRA in MI team OR view the refresher module (under the PD content page). All returning teachers need to complete the KRA 2021 Recertification Content Assessment (under the PD content page) prior to administering the assessment with an 80% or higher.

Data Manager Resources

The Fall 2021 administration window is now open! You can begin loading student and enrollment data. Keep in mind, there will be many new students and enrollments as the new school year gets closer. Please be sure to continually monitor your data so that it is up to date. The MiDataHub integration is still being tested. We will update all Data Managers when it is available so please don't start using it until you hear it is ready.

Important Links and Information

  • Data Manager User Manual has steps for all of the processes you will complete in the KReady system. (You can access this manual by logging into KReady > Administration > Support.)

  • Data Guidelines Site is where you can find the Data Guidelines, Technical Specifications, webinar recording, and other materials to support your role.

  • Data Guidelines is an important document that tells you which fields are necessary for administration and reporting. (Please note that this document can change so do not download or print!)

The 2021-2022 KRA Prior Care Form has been updated to include a pandemic section to gather data on how the pandemic changed prior care decisions made by families. This information is needed for kindergarten registration. Families should select one option as it will be input into the KReady system as a dropdown option.

Visual Classroom Routines

As you prepare your classroom for the 2021-2022 school year, think about your daily schedule. Giving children a visual representation of the day’s schedule helps promote predictability and therefore safety. Routines that are the same from day to day are the most beneficial for children. Consistent daily routines help to regulate our internal rhythm. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Use words and pictures (if possible use real pictures)
  • Make the schedule interactive or movable
  • Place the schedule at your student's eye level

This Reading Mama shares a free editable visual schedule to help you create one that is unique to your classroom!

Creating Your Safe Places

A safe place or space is a great tool for students when they feel dysregulated. It can teach respect, inclusion, empathy, and healing. Components of a safe place include a comfortable spot separate from other areas of the classroom, a feelings chart, a menu of choices on how to handle their upset, and comfort objects.

Resources for Back to School Kindergarten Books

Back to school is an exciting time of year but it can also be overwhelming for our young children. Help your students by providing opportunities to connect their feelings to characters in these back-to-school books.

Here are a few back-to-school book lists:
