Greetings Kelly Creek Community
Like many of you, we are very saddened and outraged by the recent tragic deaths of members of the Black community. It is a stark reminder that inequality and injustice continue to exist in our country.
In response to recent events, we wanted to send out this communication to our community to restate our school values. Our Kelly Creek expectations are: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. These words are not something we take lightly, and they apply to students and staff. These expectations are our guidelines for making Kelly Creek a place where all students, staff, and community members feel welcome while we continue the fight against systemic racism in our schools.
We are committed to ensuring EVERY student feels safe and that they belong at Kelly Creek. We want to be clear that we believe BLACK LIVES MATTER and are committed to the following:
BE RESPONSIBLE:
We will be vigilant in finding curriculum and educational materials that honor and elevate diverse perspectives.
We will listen to our black students when they tell us their stories and share their point of view.
We will actively work to educate ourselves and students on matters of racism.
We will work to dismantle racism within the education system and our community.
BE SAFE:
We will stop racist acts when we see or hear them happening at Kelly Creek.
We will focus on restorative practices when responding to student behavior.
We will be vigilant in examining our own biases and do better.
BE RESPECTFUL:
We will celebrate Black members in our community.
We will be respectful to our students and colleagues as they learn, and will make sure that we are not putting the burden of educating people about racism on our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) colleagues or students.
We remain committed to providing equitable education and to standing up to injustices within our community.
From the Principal
It is so hard to believe that the year has officially come to a close. What an interesting school year 2019-20 turned out to be. I want to officially thank each of you for your support and as I transition to Highland in the fall, I am confident that the next principal will continue moving our community forward. The new principal will be announced later this week so stay tuned for that announcement.
