Media Center Newsletter, Volume 6, January 2016

Hello!

In this edition, you will find information about January classes, Jewish American Heritage Month, the new Galileo password, the spelling bee and the mac cart.

Media Classes

2nd Grade

Lesson A: Encyclopedia: Basics of using an encyclopedia (what it is, how to use it and exploring it).

Lesson B: Art & Max: Students will interpret by drawing a picture of my description of the lizard, Max. It's a great creative story time activity.

3rd Grade

Poetry: We will read the book "Love that dog" by Sharon Creech and create a shape poem as a class. Love that dog is a book written in verse and addresses different types of poetry.

4th Grade

Bibliography: This lesson will build on the lesson Mrs. Hines is doing with your classes. We will learn how to create a citation by hand while also using easybib.com for a quick comparison. We will create a bibliography as a class using different resources.

5th Grade

Website Authority: Students will use a rubric to assess various websites to see if they are 'real' or not. They will learn what to look for when searching out reliable sources when they stray from databases such as Galileo when they research.

SPELLING BEE

Friday, Jan. 22nd, 8:30-9:30am

Main Campus Gym

4th & 5th Grades ONLY:

Our annual Spelling Bee will take place in the gym from 8:30 - 9:30am. Please make sure to hold your classroom Bees by Wednesday, January 20th. Your top two winners will take place in our school-wide Bee. I am attaching the school-wide study list to the newsletter email.

All 4th and 5th grade classes will attend the bee. Please email me your two classroom winners when you know them!

3rd grade classes are invited to watch, as well!

Scholastic Book Room

The book room has been organized and labeled! Every bin now has a list of books that should be in there and a colored sticker on the bin to indicate which color curriculum card belongs in the bin (either orange, green, blue or red). This will help you find books you need a little easier and reshelve them when you are finished. I can always explain the system to you if you stop by! Thanks!

Jewish American Heritage Month

We are celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month a little early (it is usually celebrated in May). Here are some resources to enhance your classroom lessons or discussions:

There are also some great e-books available that you can access by searching in our APS database. You can access the database here:

Books are also on display in the media center.

Mac Cart

The Mac Cart is currently not charging. I'm hoping to have someone out to take a look at it. In the meantime, you are welcome to take a few macs at a time with their chargers (Please just check them out with me). Unfortunately, the cart just isn't charging them. They will charge on their own with an outlet. I will keep you posted.

NEW GALILEO PASSWORD (as of 1/5/16)

The current galileo password for students to access Galileo while at home is: reduce

They do not need a password while at school.
