Husky Howler
October 1, 2021
Dear Hill-Roberts Families:
It was wonderful to see so many families in the building for Welcome Back Night last night. It was another step in our "return to normalcy" and there was a real positive buzz throughout the building. We encourage families who were unable to attend to reach out to their child(ren)'s teacher to strengthen the home-to-school relationship.
As mentioned in the Remind message I sent yesterday, our first round of COVID Safety Testing was a success. We have been told to plan for one significant change that will take place beginning next week. Rather than continue to "double swab" where students swab their nose with two different "q-tips," they will only need to swab with one "q-tip."
Congratulations to the two HRES families who won Visa gift cards as part of the APS Consent Raffle. The families have been contacted and received their gift cards.
We're now up to 215 out of 402 Hill-Roberts students who are participating in our weekly testing. Families who have already provided consent do not need to do anything to have their children continue to participate. Families who would like their children to begin participating in next week's round of testing have until the end of the day Tuesday (10/5) to complete the consent form: COVID Testing Program Consent
Enjoy what looks to be a beautiful weekend.
Sincerely,
Frank W. Rich, Principal
From the Music Room
This week in Music we are all about instruments! Almost everyone at Hill Roberts played an instrument, those who did not will join next week.
3rd and 4th graders have been echoing rhythm patterns on our classroom tubanos and hand drums. Tubanos are the large, colorful drums in the back of the Music room. In the pictures, notice that some students are playing by themselves - they chose two rhythm patterns to echo with the rest of the class. It is like the students are the teacher!
Third graders have asked about playing an instrument called the recorder. It has a sound similar to a flute, another member of the Woodwind family. Third graders in the past have learned how to play the recorder and extend their music literacy skills. One of the difficulties of COVID-19 in a school setting is that we weren’t able to play wind instruments safely. The district-wide elementary music teachers are going to be meeting remotely soon, and we should have some guidance regarding recorder playing after that meeting. Stay tuned!
First and second graders are playing our classroom xylophones and metallophones to a song which we learned the second week of school called “Teddy Bear”. Second graders are actually learning how to change chords on their instruments as they sing, quite an achievement for second graders!
Kindergarten and first-grade students are singing “Teddy Bear” also, and are playing rhythm sticks/xylophones and or metallophones. Ask your student to share their experiences this week!

CREST Winners
During the school day, Huskies who exhibit our core values of Caring, Respect, Excellence, Safety & Trust can earn a CREST ticket from any Hill-Roberts staff member (including the bus drivers!). Each student who earns a CREST Ticket has their name placed into a drawing to earn a weekly prize that is picked by Mrs. Cotsalas. Their name is called during the morning announcements and they get their photo taken with a CREST Certificate.
