Update on our January Food Drive
During the month of January, our school collected nonperishable food for the Mukilteo Food Bank. Our 5th grade leadership team along with help from other students, have been dedicating their time to collecting, counting, sorting and organizing donations from classrooms. These students spend their recess time on Tuesday and Thursdays doing this.
We are very proud to announce that together we have collected 4,366 food items. How incredible!! This food will benefit families within the Mukilteo School District. Thank you all very much for your generosity through your donations of food.
The class that donated the most nonperishable food items was Ms. Dodson's 3rd grade class collecting 524 cans. They won a class party of their choice. 2nd place class was Mrs. Naficy's kindergarten collecting 497 cans. Third place was Mrs. Jenson's 4th grade class collecting 433 cans. The grade level that collected the most was the 3rd grade. Again, thank you for all of your support throughout this food drive and coming together to help our community!
Valentines Day Information
Hello Families,
Valentine’s Day is coming up and we wanted to let you know what that will look like in school this year with the Covid rules. Your child’s teacher will be communicating with you if they will be having a celebration in their classroom and what that will look like.
Just a reminder that we cannot have students eating or sharing food inside the classroom.
Thank you, for understanding.

Dear Picnic Point Families:
Happy New Year!! Here we are in late January 2022 already. The school year is flying by. We are continuing to practice safety precautions and follow COVID safe guidelines in hopes of keeping our children healthy and in school. We appreciate all that you are doing at home as well.
At the end of this month, we will have our second schoolwide assessment called iReady. This will be an opportunity to celebrate student growth in reading and math, as we are halfway through the school year.
My hope is to have a time soon when we can bring everyone together in person and share the excitement of what your children are learning.
Sincerely,
Ali Williams

Our character trait focus for Trimester 2 is Perseverance!
We are practicing perseverance in school right now. Perseverance can be defined as the strength to do something, even when it is hard for your mind, body, or emotions; to push yourself to work through challenges. We see students persevering in many ways on campus, such as working through a difficult math problem, learning how to see through a new pair of glasses, using self-management skills to practice deep breathing when stressed, or making new friends while learning a second language. There are times when parts of school can be a large challenge for students, and we are excited to see students rising to the challenge, with the wonderful support of family members, teachers, and staff.
Goal setting is one way to help your child learn about working hard and building strength to tackle a challenge. Talk with your child about something that is hard for them, and help them to see that as an opportunity, not a failure. Then, work together to break the task or problem down into manageable chunks and brainstorm ways to build up skills that would help with each part. Modeling this out loud for children can help them learn that it is okay to try hard things and how to keep going, even when presented with a challenge.

Dulce Estrada - Parent Liaison
Hi Picnic Point Families!
My name is Dulce Estrada, and I am the Family Engagement Liaison here at Picnic Point. I hope all of you and your families are healthy. If you need any information about resources, please let me know. You can call me Monday and Tuesday from 8am to 4pm at 425-366-3430 or email me at any time at estradadx@mukilteo.wednet.edu.
I would like to let you know that I am here as a resource for you; for example, I have a Spanish speaking family’s group that meets once a month, which provides an opportunity to get to know other parents and to share ways to support each other as well. I would like to know if this is something you are interested in having in your own language, as I am here to support all families. Please feel free to contact me and have a wonderful day.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Estrada
4th Grade News - Salmon
In 4th grade, one of our science units involves learning about the amazing life cycle of salmon.
Thanks to our PTA for the grant that allowed Sound Salmon Solutions (the salmon hatchery in Edmonds) to bring in a large salmon tank filled with 300 baby salmon! 4th graders as well as other grade levels, have gotten to share in the beginning stages of a salmon’s life. It has been amazing to see all the changes day by day and to bring science to life. The salmon tank currently resides in Mrs. Jenson’s classroom where it will stay until April or May. We are so excited to watch them grow! Thank you again to the PTA for supporting students’ lifelong learning. -

PTA News
In January the PTA coordinated a snowflake project where every student in the school was given paper, scissors, and a little guidance and the rest was up to their own unique vision. We absolutely love how it turned out and the students are loving finding their snowflakes when they come to the office.
The 1st round of PTA grants were approved and we can already see the benefits! The grants include:
- online book membership
- social skills books for the resource room
- pinnies (jerseys) for recess soccer
- math and reading enrichment games
- salmon tank & eggs with an entire curriculum and release from Sound Salmon Solutions
AND MORE!
**We have one more round this school year and can’t wait to put the PTA money to good use!
We are actively trying to coordinate an online trivia night for February so stay tuned for more details!
As always, please consider joining the PTA and help support Picnic Point Elementary

Message from our librarian, Troy Miller
The Washington State Children’s Choice Book Award (also know as WCCPBA) is a true children’s choice award, sponsored by the Washington Library Association, and each year over 100,000 from around our state vote for their favorite book. Twenty books are nominated each year, and sometimes the vote is very close.
Thanks to our awesome PTA, we purchased 2 copies of each book (this has been happening for many years – thanks PTA!!!) The books began circulating from classroom to classroom this week, and every class will have a chance to read all 20 books! Voting will be in the library in April. I love this time of year!
This is the month when most grades start a research project. We have 3 databases available for elementary: PebbleGo (username picnic, password school); World Book Online (kids and student); and Gale Research Tools (choose elementary). All can be reached on the student page under Research Tools. 4th and 5th graders are also setting up accounts in NoodleTools (also in Research Tools) to make bibliographies; they will be able to use their account throughout their years in MSD.
Second graders have learned how to search, hold books, and check their accounts in Destiny Discover, the library software. Kindergartners and 1st graders are reading books about and discussing friendship and kindness – plus we also celebrated National Squirrel Day last week.
Did you know that 2 former PI students are heading for the Olympics? Jean-Luc Baker is competing in ice-dancing, and Sean Beighton is the men’s curling team coach! I’ll be following them and hope you will be too! (They both liked to read 😊)
As always, email me with any questions you may have millertl@mukilteo.wednet.edu.

Keep up the good work and hopefully things will be a lot better by the end of February (fingers crossed)!
