Message from the Superintendent
September 1, 2021
Dear ECSD Families,
The month of September means back to school, fall colors and the beginning of a new season. We are especially excited for this new school year. The teachers and principals have the classrooms and schools ready, our fall sports teams and bands are underway and we have hosted Mariner Day, Saints Days and our elementary open houses. We are ready! The pandemic is still presenting challenges and as we have from the beginning of the pandemic,
East China School District will continue to follow the guidance of our local health authority, the St. Clair County Health Department. ECSD will return to face to face instruction for all students and back to our normal school arrival and dismissal times. Our first day of school is next Tuesday, September 7 and we are looking forward to an exciting school year full of the activities that we missed during the height of the pandemic.
Over the summer months ECSD has not only prepared for the academic year but we have also prepared to support the social and emotional needs of our students. Each school will now have a social worker to work with individuals and groups of students. Also, ECSD teachers are attending professional training to develop understanding and support within their classrooms.
We will work together to provide a strong academic school year as well as being there for each other. Our students will follow our lead. Let's show them how to give grace, understanding and patience when it is needed.
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year!
Sincerely,
Suzanne Cybulla
East China Schools Superintendent
As we continue to follow the guidelines/recommendations from the St. Clair County Health Department, SCCHD, below are some questions that have been asked regarding this school year. I hope that this provides clarification as you plan for the return to school. ECSD will continue to keep you informed about any important information and updates.
Will face masks be required at school?
No, masks are not required but they are welcomed by anyone who would like to wear a mask. Unless mandated by public health officials, facial coverings will not be required for any students or staff and will be the parent/guardian choice for the 2021-2022 school year.
Will ECSD offer a virtual option for students?
New for this school year, ECSD will offer a virtual academy. Information regarding the East China Virtual Academy (ECVA) can be found on our district website: East China Virtual Academy (ECVA)
Will my child be required to get the COVID-19 vaccine to attend school?
No. The Covid-19 vaccine is not listed on the School Required Vaccination List. For more information please see: School Required Vaccines for Parents by MDHHS
Will student-athletes need to be tested for COVID-19 to participate?
No. Unless it becomes mandatory by public health officials, MDHHS and MHSAA lifted all requirements for student testing as of June 22, 2021.
Will any student need to be tested for COVID-19 to attend school?
No. Getting testing is a parent/guardian choice. The district does encourage staff and students to get tested if exposed to COVID-19 or symptomatic.
Will you separate students who are vaccinated from unvaccinated students? No.
The East China School District will continue with the following strategies:
Continue to collaborate with the St. Clair County Health Department regarding best practices for limiting the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Continue strategic school cleaning practices implemented last year to help maintain healthy facilities.
Run air purifiers with HEPA grade filters in every classroom and office.
Collaborate with public health officials to follow contact tracing and quarantine protocols.
Compel students and staff to stay home if sick or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
