The teachers in the upper grades have been working hard ensuring they have exposed our 3rd and 4th graders to as much content as possible before they are given the opportunity to shine on Istep the next several days. It is stressful. It is pressure. Give a 3rd or 4th grade teacher a hug or high five this week!

HSE Safety Communication Terms

Below you will see the new safety vocabulary for communication around lockdown scenarios for all schools in HSE. These different ranges of lockdown will be communicated, as stated below and in no other matter, by local police/emergency responders or district leadership. When you receive communication about a lockdown, use this card (in your mailbox) to ensure you understand your responsibility. Please place the laminated mini version by your phone or in a place that you will easily access during a lockdown event. Please ensure that your sub-folder has the same information. eLearning in HSE - An update on district discussion

HSE leadership are currently engaged in great conversation about the potential for eLearning options for all K-12 students in HSE. Below you will find the "draft" version of the first ideas around this concept. The district will continue to inform us of our responsibilities after the items are discussed and the Board of Trustees makes an approval or gives us directives of our eLearning responsibilities. We will formulate a local plan to provide you with time to complete any work around activity in preparation for this event and future eLearning days (snow day make ups).

Got Sub Plans?

The last several weeks there has been an increase in the amount of subs requested at BSE. In the event you need a sub, we want you to have a sub, especially if we cannot get creative coverage figured out. Our only option sometimes is splitting, which is happening too often where parents are beginning to ask questions.


Fatima has been reviewing sub plans created, and been a substitute across rooms on multiple occasions. In order to market ourselves to substitutes moving forward now that the pay increase has taken place, we need to ask why are subs picking other schools when they have the choice?


If you have a template that you are proud of, and use each time, please email an example to Fatima. Having a school-wide template may be the way to go for consistency and based on some feedback received from our subs who do return. Until we make decisions regarding this, think about the following:


  • Do you have emergency plans that a teammate can grab for you?
  • How can you keep the daily routine as normal as possible for a guest teacher but mostly, for the kids?
  • What information is most important and should be at the top of your sub plans?
  • What do your teammates use?
  • Are we creating plans that will make the day worth it for kids or are we just keeping them busy? (If we wouldn't give packets or worksheets when we are here, we shouldn't with a guest teacher either.)
  • Are your plans easily accessible in a folder? What else should be included?

This is the last year our children will take ISTEP before ILEARN takes over (see more below to learn more.)

The specials schedule will be adjusted only on the days there is testing. Please check your calendar to see if your specials changes and which days between February 27-March 7. Thank you for talking with your classes about the importance of reducing our traffic and volume in the hallways. Encourage 3rd and 4th grade when you see them!

State Report Card Changes

The state report card, although not finalized fully, indicates a new addition to the total grade in relationship to the "well rounded" score. This is the 4th grade science ISTEP score that will now count for 5% of our school grade. More details to come later.

IREAD 2018-2019

IREAD will continue to be used for all 3rd grade students in Indiana. It will be utilized in a different format and company.

SNACK ATTACK PROGRAM!!!!!

The following information was sent to families a few weeks ago in a Skylert. Apologies for not getting the info to you as well!


Brooks School Elementary is pleased to announce the start of a program for those kids on the Free or Reduced Lunch Programs (or really any student in need!). The program is called Indy Snack Attack and is designed to help those kids who need a little extra nourishment to get them through the weekend until they can receive a hot meal at school on Monday.

Here's how the program works. Your student will pick up a small sack on Friday to be taken home over the weekend. The sack is filled with individually wrapped snacks such as granola bars, fruit cups, pop tarts, or crackers/peanut butter just to name a few. The type of snacks will vary each week. Please let us know if your child has a peanut allergy. They will receive a special bag of peanut-free snacks.
