Keynote Speaker: Kathy Swan
Kathy Swan is a Professor of Social Studies at the University of Kentucky. Her research focuses on standards-based technology integration, authentic intellectual work, and documentary-making in the social studies classroom. Dr. Swan has been a four-time recipient of the National Technology Leadership Award in Social Studies Education, innovating with web-based interactive technology curricula including the Historical Scene Investigation Project, the Digital Directors Guild, and Digital Docs in a Box. Her co-authored book And Action! Doing Documentaries in the Social Studies Classroom and children’s series Thinking Like A Citizen were published in fall 2013. She is also the advisor for the Social Studies Assessment, Curriculum, and Assessment Collaborative (SSACI) at the Chief Council of State School Officers (CCSSO) and was the project Director/Lead Writer of the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standard.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Phil Gersmehl
Phil Gersmehl, PhD, is an educational-material author and teacher trainer. He taught for five years at Concordia Teachers College, then moved to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In 2004 he started a decade of split positions, serving as co-director of the New York Center for Geographic Learning and half-time Professor at the University of Minnesota. He is currently Visiting Research Professor at Central Michigan University, where he works with Carol and other teachers to develop materials for a variety of geography classes, including a kit for Parents’ Night in early grades, a 6th-grade World Geography sequence, and materials for World Geography and History, US Geography and History, and Advanced Placement Human Geography.
Keynote Speaker: Laurel Schmidt
Laurel Schmidt has worked for thirty years in the field of education. She thrived for 23 years in the classroom, teaching every grade K-8 before becoming a principal. She writes extensively about multiple intelligence theory, effective teaching practices and the challenges of school leadership. She presents nationwide to parents, teachers, mentors, administrators and school board members. She conducts staff development for teachers based on her latest book, Classroom Confidential: The 12 Secrets of Great Teachers. Laurel also works with school districts, county offices of education, and administrative associations to enhance the skills of principals and school leaders through her Gardening in the Minefield seminars. She is currently Director of Pupil Services for the Santa Monica-Malibu School District, and adjunct professor at Antioch University
