Back to School 2020-2021: Part 1
August 9, 2020
A note from me...
I know it has been a minute since you have heard from me. Communication is a major priority however, with all the uncertainly over the past month I was hesitant to begin sharing information with the likelihood that it may change. It was my hope to send my first correspondence on Friday, but truthfully the day got away from me. Apologies for sending this on a Sunday but I wanted you to be armed with information to begin your week. I will likely send a "Part 2" later on this week with more detailed information as we progress. We are working on items such as daily learning schedules, Freshman Orientation and Parent Meeting, Senior Parent Meeting, Open House, etc. Stay tuned...
There is quite a bit of information below especially about our "Responsible Restart Plan". This is all quite a bit overwhelming and anxiety-inducing. All of the feelings amongst our staff, students, and families are valid. I wish I had some magic that could make all of those feelings go away but alas I do not. However, I do want to do my best to reassure you and work to bring us together. To that end, I share this story with you...
In late February Nick Butler and Owen McClain (know 2020 grads) approached me about the possibility of adding a "spirit" rock to Jerome as a part of their Senior presentations in English IV. Nick's dad was working at the new FedEx facility on Industrial Parkway and they unearthed a huge rock. His dad's business was willing to donate the manpower to move the rock to Jerome. We talked about it and had tentative plans to bring it in the spring.
Unfortunately, we went into quarantine and Nick became infected with COVID and had to battle for his life. The rock coming to Jerome certainly was not a priority. We followed Nick and his battle and thankfully he was able to recover. Nick returned home and I was expecting him to lay low. However, out of the blue in May, I received an email from him that read simply, "Return of the Rock Project". Nick and Owen were determined to help leave a legacy for the Class of 2020.
They worked diligently with his dad and the district and a couple of weeks ago the rock was delivered to Jerome. The smile on Nick's face and excitement in his voice when the oversized semi-truck and industrial forklift was dropping off the rock will forever be in my memory. It was a defining moment for Nick and I believe for Jerome. (See pictures below!)
Once we confirmed the project was back on I began working with the Class of 2020 leaders to figure out a way to commemorate the rock and the Class of 2020. After some research, students shared a variety of quotes to add to our dedication plaque. One of the quotes shared rose to the top and developed a slight variation from the words of A.P. Herbert. (You will see the dedication plaque on the rock soon!)
"Nothing is wasted, nothing is in vain: the seas roll over and the Celts remain."
I share this with you because right now the seas are high and very choppy and seem almost impossible to navigate. But we will make it and will still remain when this pandemic passes.
Stay strong and steadfast.
With love and respect,
Mike
