What's Happening in Room 313?

Parent To Do List

Please send in Raleigh intent forms (lime green) and first payment no later than January 31st. As we get closer to the trip we need to start giving locations downpayment checks for our adventures! Please make sure to check if your child is going, if you'd like to chaperone (we need more chaperones!!) and if you are in need of financial assistance for the trip! The first payment is $57.

As it gets colder we are seeing more and more students tardy to class. Please remember the late bell rings at 7:55 and we begin instruction at the bell!

What Are We Learning??

Math- Wrapping up division and beginning geometry. If your child is still struggling with division please let me know! watching YouTube videos on "Big 7 Division" is really helpful as this is the way the teach kids and not at all the way we all learned!

Reading- Daily 5 is going to begin being reading with a focus in our content areas such as Social Studies and Science! Students are also learning about Evidence Based Terms for their reading responses! Students should use terms such as "because," "the author stated," "on page...," "from my prior knowledge, I know," etc.

Science- Nutrition! All about food labels and making healthier choices!

Social Studies- North Carolina history in connection to Biltmore and Asheville.

Writing- Publishing narrative pieces and moving on to informational writing!

This Thursday at 7:20 AM Mrs. Grimes will be holding a VOLUNTARY Skype session with a class in Kenya for her Passion Project Group.

One of the topics that students were able to choose from for Passion Projects was participating in a Cultural Exchange with a class in Kenya. Those students have been researching about the country Kenya, learning about the Kenyan Culture, and even had the opportunity to send Winter cards to students in December.

After the students in Kenya received our cards, they decided they wanted to Skype with us in order to teach us about their language, Swahili. Because of the time change, in order for us to Skype with the class in Kenya we will have to hold the session at 7:20 am which is before school. Since it is before school, I am opening this lesson up to anyone in 4th grade that would like to participate. The Skype session will be this Thursday morning January 22nd at 7:20am. I am asking for students to arrive in my room between 7:00-7:15am. (I will let the teachers on morning duty know that they are able to come up to my room.) If you have any questions about this exciting opportunity for our students please let me know!

Thanks for understanding the reason for the early morning Skype session.
