Celebration Assembly
We are committed to the journey of developing EACH child to be an inspired learner and a caring, contributing citizen.
Notes from the Principal
This year, as a holiday gift for staff, I'm taking each grade level for 2 hours to give our teachers a bit of extra time. As someone who impresses the value of each instructional minute, I want to make sure that kids' time is well-used. As a former history major, I decided to take a historical view and make sure that we, as a school, do a bit more to honor African American History Month. 4K students will explore how we're similar all similar and different. 5K students will explore the idea of dreams for the future through the lens of Martin Luther King's famous speech. 1st and 2nd graders will learn about the concept of segregation through the story of Ruby Bridges. 3rd grade will learn about famous African Americans throughout our history. 4th and 5th graders will (or have) learned about the Underground Railroad. I very much enjoy my time planning for and teaching students. Ask your child what they learned...I hope they'll be able to remember something!

Arrival & Dismissal Reminders
- Watch out for our crossing guards!
- Children SHOULD NOT be dropped off prior to 8:30 unattended. There is not staff to supervise students.
- Changes to a child's dismissal plan MUST be made prior to 2:30 pm so that messages can get to all the necessary parties. We work hard to make sure each child gets where they need to go. Please call the office, as teachers often don't check their emails during the afternoon.
- If you're a car pick up, don't block the intersection on Layton. It slows things down in the long run.
Artsy Corner with Ms. Nolan
Mrs. Nolan will be out this month for surgery. Ms. Anderson is her sub. Wish Mrs. Nolan a speedy recovery!

EHSA Update
We are getting excited about the Edgewood Family Movie Night, February 8th (Doors open at 6, movie at 6:15.) Join us for a fun night out for the whole family- bring blankets & pillows (chairs will be provided.) There will be no charge for the event, but popcorn and concessions available for purchase. More details will come home in Thursday Folders, Sign-up Genius, and a Facebook Event. (Do you follow “Edgewood Elementary School” on Facebook? Check it out if you don’t. J )
At our January EHSA meeting, 2nd grade came to visit. They gave a thorough overview of what goes on in 2nd grade:
- Reading: building endurance and looking for character development throughout the story
- Writing: Writing stories, non-fiction based on interests or “How to,” and realistic fiction. The students use self assessment rubrics, peer editing and goal cards to track their progress.
- Math: Time, money, and using visual representations to understand number sense
- Science: States of matter- solid/liquid/gas and how things change. What happens when you add hot water to a cold ice cube. Part of this exploration included going outside and investigating snowflakes.
Mrs. Boyd is spending a couple hours in each grade level teaching over the couple of months. She will be teaching the kids about African American History. Some of the topics include African American Scientists, inventors, people in history, and the Underground Railroad (which is not a railroad- ask the 4th graders!)
Looking Ahead:
Friday, February 8th, 6 PM- Edgewood Family Movie Night
Tuesday, February 12th, 6:30 PM- EHSA Meeting (less than 1 hour. Kids welcome too! )
Tuesday, March 12th, 6:30 PM- EHSA Meeting (always less than 1 hour! J)
Cold Weather is Here!
If students do not have snow pants, snow boots, or snow mittens, they MUST stay on the blacktop by the building where it's cleared.
Please label coats, hats, and gloves with a sharpie on the tag, and if you're missing something, encourage your child to check the lost and found if something is missing.
If you need assistance getting a hat, coat, or snow gear for your child, please let Mrs. Boyd or Mrs. Michlig know.
