Spotlight on Strategies: A Closer Look at Close Reading

One of Canyon Rim's best teaching practices is Close Reading. A key idea of the Common Core State Standards is: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. Starting in kindergarten, students are being asked to "cite evidence" or "justify reasoning" by using the text. Close reading is a strategy which helps students get into the habit of reading complex text and using the text to support answers. Essentially, close reading means reading to uncover layers of meaning that lead to deeper comprehension. See the graphic below to see the steps of Close Reading.

Canyon Rim Visual and Performing Arts

Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) are alive and well in 5th and 6th grades! Due to strong parent feedback and commitment from our Orange Unified School Board, art and music were brought back to the elementary schools this year. Our 5th and 6th graders attend classes 2 times per week in one of the following areas: Choir, Strings, Band or Art. The students who are participating in Art and Choir will switch at the semester. Last week, our 5th and 6th grade families were invited to the VAPA showcase to show off the hard work of our students and VAPA teachers. The students did a wonderful job!

Canyon Rim Employees of the Year

Each year, the Canyon Rim selects one certificated and one classified Employee of the Year to honor the hard work and effort to make our school a great place. Congratulations to both of these deserving staff members!

PTA Parents' Night Out and Raffle

I would like to personally invite you to Canyon Rim’s fundraising event, Parents’ Night Out. This fun, adult only event is on February 26th. Buy your tickets now and don’t miss your opportunity to bid on unique auction items. In addition, the winner of the much anticipated Vacation Raffle will be drawn live! Proceeds will raise money for upgrading and purchasing new technology for our students and classrooms. Last year, our event brought in over $35,000 which allowed us to purchase 160 Chrome Books. With the Chrome Books, students are able to research, respond and collaborate virtually, create multi-media presentations, and use 21st century skills on a daily basis in the classroom.

Sell your vacation raffle tickets - last year our very on Mrs. Berg won the trip! For each family that sells 10 tickets your student(s) attends a fun basketball dunk show!

Own a business? Consider donating an in-kind item for the auction or help underwrite the raffle prize! Contact me with any questions.

Feel free to share with your friends.

Best regards,

Mrs. Abella, Canyon Rim Parent and PTA Member
