Workshop Description
Learn about the legal obligations to English learners and their characteristics. This interactive session will prepare you to work more effectively with ELs and to equip you with strategies you can put to use immediately.
If you have even one EL in your class or school, you will find this session valuable!
There is a text that will be referenced throughout the workshop, The 6 Principles of Exemplary Teaching for English Learners, it is not required as part of the workshop, but you may wish to purchase a copy through the ESC when you register.

About the presenters:
Brenda Custodio
Dr. Brenda Custodio is a retired teacher and administrator for Columbus City Schools. She currently teaches at the Ohio State University as well as serving as an educational consultant. She is a frequent presenter at state and national conferences on developing literacy for English learners, working with newcomers, helping students with trauma, and supporting students with interrupted education, especially refugees. She is the author of How to Design and Implement a Newcomer Program and the co-author of Students with Interrupted Education: Bridging What They Know and What They Can Do with Judith O’Loughlin.
Sara Levitt
Sara is a former ESL teacher in Whitehall, Ohio with a Master’s degree in TESOL. She serves on the board of Ohio TESOL. She now operates her own educational consulting business and works with school districts around Ohio on topics such as federal compliance, best practices for English learners, and building literacy skills for second language students.
