The Tragedy of Macbeth

CeCe Moss Bk. 5

Macbeth's Downfall

Supernatural causes tell Macbeth that he shall be King; as a result, Macbeth ends up being murdered.¨Stay, you imperfect speakers, and tell me more! By Sinel's death I know I am Thane of Glamis, But how Cawdor? The Thane of Cawdor lives, A prosperous gentleman; and to be king Stands not within the prospect of belief...¨ (Act 1 Scene 3). This quote shows that the witches told him he would be Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King. If the witches had not told Macbeth this, he would not have killed the king which ultimately leads to his downfall. Also, ¨Be bloody, bold, and resolute; laugh to scorn The pow´r of man, for none of woman born Shall harm Macbeth” (Act 4 Scene 1). This quote shows that an apparition tells Macbeth to not worry over any man born of a woman because they cannot hurt Macbeth. This majorly helps to lead to Macbeth´s downfall because he is careless and doesn't protect himself like he should from danger, getting him killed. Lastly, “I bear a charmed life, which must not yield To one of woman born” (Act 5 Scene 8). This quote shows that Macbeth believes everything the witches and the 2 apparatuses told him. He has been reckless and has put himself in danger because he believes that no one can hurt him. Ultimately, by the witches telling him everything they did, they led him to his downfall and his murder.

Edvard Munch's The Scream

As you can see in the picture, the main character in the painting is screaming. There are people in the background that represent the witches watching Macbeth's every move. They are telling him what to do without really telling him and jerking his life around. Macbeth (Scream) is torn by decisions he has to make based off of what the witches have told him and what he knows to be right. The character represents the way Macbeth feels throughout the story.

"All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!" (Act 1 Scene 2).

This quote shows that the witches (people standing the the background) are the one that told Macbeth that he will become king. If the witches had not told Macbeth this, he wouldn't have killed the king, and ultimately been killed himself in the end.

"If the assassination Could trammel up the consequences, and catch, With his surcease, success, that but this blow Might be the be-all and end-all here. But here, upon this bank and shoal of time, We'ld jump the life to come. But in these cases We still have judgment here, that we but teach Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return To the plague inventor" (Act 1 Scene 6).

In this excerpt from the book, Macbeth is talking with Lady Macbeth about their plans to murder Duncan. Macbeth is still struggling with the decision, and says that if their plan could be done quickly and with no consequences then he would do it now, but everything has a consequence. The character scream represents this decision that Macbeth has to make.
