Dear Parents,

Where is the time going? We are half way through the month of May and there is still so much more learning to be done! And, what would the end of the year be without all the special programs in store for everyone to enjoy!

This week our second grade students visited The Connecticut Science Center and participated in the "Plant Laboratory Program." There they had an opportunity to observe different types of plants, dissect celery and study large collard green leaves. They learned about the structure of plants and how plants sustain themselves. When they weren’t in one of the guided programs, the children had the chance to visit the other exhibits in the Science Center. The beautiful weather made for a lovely lunch outside. This field trip experience correlated with their current science unit on soils and plants. Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this field trip and also to the parent chaperones who volunteered!

Our kindergarteners were treated to a guided walk on the Nature Trail earlier in the week. We are fortunate to have this resource right outside our door. The walk was guided by The East Granby Land Trust board members who explained and identified plants and animal habitats that can be found throughout the trail. A special thank you to Mrs. Amanda Thompson, Mr. Brian Kleinman and Mr. Ian Clark for giving our students an up-close look at the natural world around them. At the end of the trail, Ms. Paul, the East Granby Children's Librarian, met the children and read them a story about Earth Day. It is wonderful for our children to have an authentic learning experience which is supported by East Granby community members who volunteer their time.

Another community connection was being made at Allgrove School this week as well. The second graders had a presentation from Mrs. Linda Wolf and Mrs. Alicia Van Neil from the East Granby Food Pantry today. Mrs. Wolf and Mrs. Van Neil spoke to the children about how the food pantry works and who it serves. These presentation are in preparation for the upcoming second grade Community Service Food Drive project. Next week the second graders will host a whole school assembly to present the information about the food drive. The assembly will be the kick off to this spring’s Allgrove School Food Drive. The food drive will run from May 23rd - May 27th. Further information will be coming home next week.

Our annual Mariposa Festival Celebration was the perfect way to cap off the week! The first grade students celebrated Festival Mariposa with the high school AP Spanish and Spanish Honors IV students. Mrs. Duffy, East Granby High School Spanish Teacher and her students rotated through the four classrooms teaching the children Spanish, reading stories, playing games and making a craft-butterflies on a stick. To conclude the celebration everyone gathered outside to dance the Mexican Hat Dance. The first grade classes have been growing butterflies and Mrs. Hart was able to release her class’ butterflies as her students looked on.

Safety message: I know the weather is getting warmer and the children are anxious to wear those long awaited summer clothes. However, I am seeing lots of flip flops and I want to take a moment to remind everyone that flip flops are not allowed in school. Every child needs to be able to run around and play safely on all the areas of the playground including the playscape. In order to do so, they need to be wearing securely fitting foot wear. Open toe shoes are not allowed on the playscape. If you want further information about the dress code, please refer to the Allgrove School Handbook.
