Professional Development Conference Requests
If you are interested in attending a conference please contact Office of School Counseling Services first. We will need to check availability of funds before you complete the Request to Attend Conference Form which is available on the Intranet. The link is below:
Once you complete the form, return it to our office. It would be helpful if you could ask your principal to pick up a portion of the cost. Generally we’ll pay registration (if budget allows) and your school can pay additional expenses. We will tell you that we have had a lot of requests and we’re running low on funds, but if Tony can make it work, he will.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

Middle School Counseling News
Lunsford Middle School:
Day at Work is a program in which all 6th grade students at J. Michael Lunsford MS participate. It begins with counselors conducting a career lesson and survey through Family Connections. This year, lessons were taught through keyboarding in November and February. Survey results are based on student interest, personality, and favorite school subjects and indicate the top three career clusters students would likely be interested. From there, students are sent to a “day at work” site that corresponds with one of the 16 career clusters they matched highly with on the survey. This year, our Day at Work field trip is scheduled for Friday, April 21st. Each of the 16 participating sites are the result of a collaborative effort and vision of JML and the host company wanting to further educate students about future careers. By visiting a possible future career site, students become empowered and prepared to make meaningful contributions to the world. At these “day at work” sites, students are given a more in depth look at different careers, making them more knowledgeable and better prepared to make future informed decisions regarding career choice.
Riverbend Middle School:
River Bend Middle School is holding a career fair on April 3rd, from 8:30am-9:30am. We have approximately 50 presenters which cover 15 of the 16 career clusters. Some of the careers represented by our speakers include:

High School Counseling News
Freedom High School
Freedom High School has been promoting wellness all month with our FHS Eagles Are Healthy activities. Weekly Advisory lessons have been focused on different aspects of Physical, Emotional, Nutritional, Relational and Environmental health. These lessons have been leading up to our Eagles Are Healthy weeklong celebration taking place March 27-31. Each morning we are greeting our students and offering activities and giveaways, like bottles of water, stress balls, key chains, and wristbands, all focused on Physical, Emotional, Nutritional, Relational, and Environmental health.
On Friday the 31st, we are having a fair during the lunch block (12:15-2:15) where both students and staff can try yoga, Zumba, circuit training, healthy snacks, explore emotions with our Emoji photo booth and Biodots challenge, get recertified for CPR, and participate in mindfulness and art activities for recreation and relaxation. Students will earn stickers on their Wellness Passports to vie for prizes after the event, as well.
Just for staff, Susan McCormick, of the Wellness Connection, will be coming to speak about Work-Life Balance on Tuesday, Biometric Screenings from LCPS will be here on Wednesday, and a visit from Willowsford CSA will be here on Friday and more. We want to show students that we are working on getting healthy, too.

CAMPUS News- Chris Clarke
The Loudoun Chamber of Commerce: The Young Entrepreneur Academy (YEA) Investor Panel:
This event was held on March 30th at the Belmont County Club. This was an event held for the top 12 LCPS high school & middle school student business-minded entrepreneurs. If you have heard of the television show titled “Shark Tank” then you will know what YEA is trying to model.
I am proud to say that three out of the twelve student finalists were CAMPUS program students. All twelve students pitched his or her idea in front of an investor panel of professionals from area businesses. Two out of the three of our CAMPUS students earned a check for $1000 and $500.

Fostering Resilience in a Stressful World
Dr. Karin H. Spencer, Parent Resource Services
Today’s world is stressful- often rushed, hurried and on-the-go. Both child and family must juggle a host of extracurricular activities with homework, friendships, and everyday tasks. Peer pressure can start early and anxiety and stress can build related to academics and college preparation. Some children and families experience additional stressors such as illness, divorce, economic hardship, and physical, substance or alcohol abuse. We may not be able to erase daily stress or prevent adversity. However, we can nurture resilience in our children so that they are better able to respond to life’s challenges. Join this presentation to learn about the impact of stress on development as well as strategies to nurture resilience.
