THE INVASION BEGINS
TROOPS LAND ON THE BEACH OF NORMANDY
D-Day
Yesterday, on June 6, 1944, 5 landing beaches called Juno, Gold, Sword, Omaha, and Utah let loose troops from America, Britain, and Canada. The reason for this invasion was to take the key port city of Cherbourg. With control of this city the Nazi Germans no longer had the trade and no longer controlled that territory.
Dwight Eisenhower
The night before D-Day, June 6, 1944, General Dwight Eisenhower made a speech to his troops; “You are about to embark on a great crusade. The eyes of the world are upon you and the hopes and prayers of all liberty loving peoples go with you… Your task will not be an easy one… I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle… Good luck and let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”
