Hornet's Nest

Hutsell Elementary Library

November / December 2015 Edition

Authors & Illustrator visits

The Hutsell Library hosted the Class Acts Tour on November 5. This tour included authors Annabeth Bondor-Stone and Jerry A. White. Our 3rd - 5th grade Hornets had a great time cheering for books and earning points towards a set of books that was given to the library by Harper Collins. We appreciate Blue Willow Bookshop in Houston for bringing this tour to our school at no charge.

On November 16, illustrator Steve Harpster delighted students in 2nd - 5th grade with his drawing lessons. Our Hutsell Hornets had the best time drawing several characters including animals, aliens and monsters during Harpster's 50-minute presentations. Thank you Ms. Simon for previewing the drawing books and techniques with our students prior to the presentation!

Library Catalog

Remember that now you can use the Fountas & Pinnell feature in our catalog when looking for specific reading levels for students! Check out this feature by using our Library catalog and setting the desired reading levels when searching for a book.

Our school and community

Libraries are big supporters of our community, on November 10, in collaboration with our administration team, we were fortunate to meet and honor Veterans from our community in Katy. Our counselor, Maggie Benavides invited veterans from the local VFW to join us for a breakfast honoring and thanking them for their commitment to our country.

The Wellness for Growth Foundation has been offering classes to Hispanic women in our school's Parent Center since September. We celebrated the end of the courses in our library on Friday, December 4. The foundation's mission is to "Empower low-income Hispanic women through integral wellness education and skills for economic growth to improve their own and their families' well being." The graduation ceremony was beautiful!

We look forward to more community events that help men and women learn skills that will improve their lives in many ways!

November 30 - December 4 was our Hour of Code week here at Hutsell. Technology is everywhere and our students love to use iPads and computers. We used programming platforms from code.org to teach our 3rd - 5th graders how coding or programming a computer using JavaScript is as easy as dragging & dropping blocks on a workspace!

Our Hornets wrote over 5.300 lines of code during this week. We had many students showing interest in continuing to learn about programming! For more information on how to learn to write code, visit Hour of Code to watch tutorials about programming and the opportunities that are available for anyone who wants to learn this skill.

Library Reading Programs

Reading program in numbers:

The library has received 210 reading logs and projects from students in grade levels 2-5! This means that over 630 books have been read from the beginning of this program in September!!

We have also received over 100 2x2 reading logs from our 2nd graders. We're very excited

to see our students come to announcements on a weekly basis to receive their library tags.

Many of the students are using iPads and computers to create digital projects for their tags. Way to go Hornets!

Upcoming reading program:

Think Snow for Kinder & 1st grades : January

We celebrate our Hornets' birthdays with books!

More and more students want to celebrate their birthday by donating books to the library! Currently, we have 58 Hutsell Hornets that have joined Buzz's Birthday Book Club, this means that we have surpassed the number of students that generously donated books to the library last school year! We're very thankful that our Hornets have chosen to help our library collection grow by donating books! It's never too late to join the Birthday Book Club. Simply, fill out a form to send a donation to our library. We will have the students choose a library bound book, place a nameplate on the book and celebrate our Hornet's birthday during announcements on the week of his / her birthday!

The forms can be found here: Buzz's Birthday Book Club
