Animals and Plants of the Ocean

Ocean life is divided into three groups

1. Plankton

2. Nekton

3. Benthos

Deep into the categories.

1. Plankton

Plankton are floating plants or animals.

Plankton plants are called phytoplankton. Phytoplanktons gains energy from saltwater minerals and sunlight.

Plankton animals are called zooplankton. Zooplankton feed on microscopic animals.

Examples of zooplankton animals include Jellyfish.

2. Nekton

most underwater animals are Nekton. Nekton can swim

They live in areas with a specific temperature and food supply in the water.

Example of Nekton include sharks, eels, octopuses and other fish.

3. Benthos

Benthos are animals and plants that live on the bottom of the ocean.

Some benthos animals, such as oysters remain in one place

Others, such as starfish and lobster move by swimming or walking

Benthos plants can only grow in areas of the ocean than sunlight reaches.
