The Teen Advisory Board

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) of the Montclair Public Library is a group of teens who participate in and influence the functioning of the library, especially for teen programming and library materials. Most importantly, TAB is a forum to have your opinions and suggestions heard.

We meet the first Wednesday of each month, September - May and members receive community service hours for participating.

A NOTE FROM OUR TAB OFFICERS

By Sammy Chee, Secretary

Howdy y’all! Welcome to the 2nd issue of Montclair Public Library’s Teen Advisory Newsletter! It’s now October, which means beautiful fall foliage, colder weather, and… HALLOWEEN! It’s time to start brainstorming for that perfect Halloween costume. Any suggestions? This month, the members of TAB bring to you some excellent jokes that will brighten up your day (if it isn’t already) as well as a book review of a book you may want to snuggle up and read. Also, does anyone watch Teen Wolf? We have some convincing predictions of the series by some of our TAB members.

We also have some amazing events this month that would be such a shame to miss out on. Coming on October 21st, we have a special MuVChat showing Back to the Future 2! This happens to be the EXACT date where the main character, Marty, is sent into the future. MuVChat allows the audience to send text messages of commentary and see then be displayed on the screen while the movie is playing. We’re visiting Germany on October 22nd this month for “Passport to Flavor,” where we’ll make some kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes) with apfelmus (stewed apples), and some kinderbowle (fruit punch). They are all pretty difficult to pronounce I must say, but don’t let that discourage you from trying these dishes! Ever heard of KORT? Well, hear ye hear ye, come join Knights of the Round Table on October 26th! This year we are adding a book challenge to the table called Excalibur. Are you up to the test? We’ll be discussing some new and upcoming young adult books…with a yummy bite to eat of course!

I’m really looking forward to see this month go by and get pumped for Halloween and all the candy! Make sure to stop around the library this month and check out the great events we have in store!

Book Review by Chloe

Divine by Mistake by P.C. Cast is about Shannon Parker, high school English teacher professional, who is summoned to Partholon, where she is considered a goddess. Partholon is a medieval land (country?) similar to ours, except it has some magical beings/things (so perhaps more similar to the land of the Greek myths, which I realize isn't very medieval at all). I think that about covers the basics.

So more importantly, this book is fantastic. Shannon is hilarious. I want to be Shannon. And if I can't be her, I'd want to be friends with her. Shannon is such a rebel because she doesn't try to be a rebel, she just is, and she's way more normal and relatable than a lot of other heroines. Shannon is so independent and always does what she thinks is right, which includes saving her friends (and lover - you go Shannon, crush the patriarchy). And while she maybe doesn't have combat skills, she doesn't need them, because she's a goddess anyway.

Besides Shannon, the other characters are fantastic too. Her friend Alanna is adorable, as well as Alanna's husband. The centaurs are so funny and don't even get me started on ClanFintan. Oh, ClanFintan. ClanFintan is the love interest and he's a centaur which may sound weird, but it's not because I mean, ClanFintan. He's all brave and funny and loyal and all the good stuff and he and Shannon have the best banter ever.

One thing I'd like to mention (and I don't care how off topic it is, it's important!), is that for once, when our main character is on a journey, we actually read about them having to take bathroom breaks. Because honestly, in all the books that have been written, characters never have to go the bathroom. Ever. Talk about setting unrealistic expectations. Shannon on the other hand, being the normal human that she is, does sometimes need to pee, and I respect that.

The world of Partholon is so interesting to read about and the pace of the book is just right, where it takes its time, but still is fast paced enough to keep you turning the pages (it would be moderately problematic if it didn't). Basically, it's just really enjoyable. 8.5 out of 10, would recommend.

Classics Review by Rohan

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain touches on important issues such as race, morality, and laws prevalent in society. Though the novel was written in a time frame when slavery was banned, one could see racism and the after effects of slavery going hand in hand. Huck is portrayed by Twain as a character who not only address the genre, "Coming- of -Age" over the course of his voyage but also faces moral struggles and reconciles his personal feelings of friendship with Jim. Huck learns to trust his moral instincts and is able to accept Jim for who he is rather than being pressured by the society.

Jokes Corner by Josh

I fear the day that my refrigerator will take its revenge. Every half hour, it will open my bedroom door, stare at me for a minute, close the door, and walk away.

If Trump wins, I’m leaving the country. If Clinton wins, I’m leaving the country. This has nothing to do with politics, I just like to travel.

My best friend and I were going camping, when I awoke in the middle of the night.
I shook my friend awake, and said “Look up, what do see?”
“I see millions of stars, and it reminds me how big and exciting this universe really is.” He said. “What do you see?”
“I see a stolen tent.” I replied.

For an answer on my math test today, I wrote “Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start.” I got an A.

The space under my bed is quite small, which means that monster that lives there must be quite small as well. It must be a baby monster, which would mean that I would have to care for it. And that is the worst horror of all, responsibility.

I never wanted to believe that my dad was stealing from his job as a road worker, but when I got home, all the signs were there.

Instead of "the John," I call my toilet "the Jim." That way it sounds better when I say I go to the Jim first thing every morning.

I like European food so I decided to Russia over there because I was Hungary. After Czech'ing the menu I ordered Turkey. When I was Finnished I told the waiter, “'Spain good but there is Norway I could eat another bite.”

Gamer Review by The Wizard

The beta for DICE’s Star Wars Battlefront has finally come to an end as of today, October 13th, 2015. The beta was a relatively big hit with most video game players, but came as a disappointment to some others. While introducing new elements and modes like Walker Assault, in which you play as either the Rebels or the Imperials, trying to invade or defend Hoth; or Drop Zone, where you try to capture pods, it also lacks some of the elements that made Star Wars Battlefront 2 such a successful game, such as space combat and Galactic Conquest. Personally, my favorite improvement to the game is the introduction of the first person view (or rather, the redesign of it), and obviously, the new and improved graphics. While simple, it provides a satisfying experience, especially when you hear the pew-pew of your blaster rifle and the enemy screaming as he is vaporized. Overall, Star Wars Battlefront is looking good, and seems to be becoming an ever popular game. We can only hope that it lives up to everyone’s high expectations.

Teen Wolf: Season 5B Predictions by Aneekah

Teen Wolf Season 5B will be released this upcoming January 5th giving fans, like myself, way too much time to predict what will happen. After the trailer was released this past Friday, viewers have been left scared yet excited for the newest season. For Season 5B I have a few predictions in mind.

First, I am sure that Stydia, the relationship between Stiles and Lydia, will definitely happen. In the previous season, Stiles is in a relationship with Malia which seems to be falling apart. He walks out on her and many fans believe its because Stiles realizes that he is still in love with his crush since third grade, Lydia.

Second, Scott and Stiles have an epic fight in the last episode of the season. Scott and Stiles have been best friends for what seems like forever and seeing the two of them argue about Theo’s twisted lies just makes everyone upset. But by the end of season 5B the two friends will make up, probably in the midst of another heated battle.

Is Alison Argent coming back? We saw her die earlier in the show but she’s been seen on set and has come to multiple panels for the show. But how could she come back to life because she is a human.

The trailer shows Cop Stilinski at the hospital having trouble breathing. Between rugged breaths he says the word “Chimera.” Does this mean that a chimera hurt the cop? Or is Cop Stilinski a chimera himself?

What did Theo mean when he said to Scott, “Our packs will be fighting for our lives?” Will Theo and Scott unite to fight against the dread doctors? Or will Theo gain Scott’s trust and then betray him once the two packs meet up with the dread doctors? And how does Alison’s father fit into all of this?

Teen Wolf has left me scared for what’s next. But it’s only another couple months until the Season 5B is released. I’ll sit tight for now.
