Aishwarya was born in Mangalore on November 1st, 1973 to Krishnaraj Rai and Brindya Rai. She was the youngest in her family, her brother being 3 years older at the time. When she was four her family moved to Bombay permanently.


Along with starring in Bollywood movies she won the Miss World Title in 1994.

She had jobs as brand ambassador for several charity organizations and campaigns, and is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). She hoped to become an architect but went into acting and modeling instead. This payed off in a big way because she is now widely considered to be "the most beautiful woman in the world" and was the first Indian female to be featured in the famous Madame Tussaud's wax museum.

She has starred in many Bollywood movies including: Iruvar, Jeans, Dil De Chuke, Chokher Bali, Dhoom 2, Enthiran, Jodhaa Akbar, The Duo, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, Taal, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, and Bunty & Bubble. Her first English movie was shot in 2004 and was called "Bride & Prejudice." She was also the first Indian Actress to be on the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.

  • Aishwarya's famous Pepsi ad co-starring Aamir Khan was shot in a single night during the Mumbai riots in 1992-93
  • Aishwarya and Aamir were invited to lunch with then US President George W Bush when he visited in India in 2006. Ash could not attend because she was filming Dhoom 2 in Brazil.
