What Will We Be Learning This Week?
The Leader in Me
This week we will be focusing on Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. We will learn the value of setting goals. We will also write mission statements which will help us to keep focused on our most important goals in school.
Math
Our study of multiplication in math continues. Students are reviewing multiplication facts and relating multiplication and division concepts. We will be solving word problems involving multiplication and division, and discussing array word problems, properties of multiplication and square numbers.
Accelerated Math has begun. Students are learning the procedures of our computer based math program. As we progress, students will be expected to master 3 objectives weekly. The Accelerated Math week runs from Thursday to Thursday. All students will learn the procedures for completing AM on paper prior to launching onto the online version. Students are welcomed to bring a charged electronic device daily, although this is not required. Students will need to bring a charged device daily beginning next week in order to do online Accelerated Math.
Science
Students will be looking at the categories of science, practicing with observation activities and discussing stereotypes of scientists. We will begin Science Studies Weekly with our unit on Land and Water.

Social Studies
In addition to our usual classwork, students will be given the opportunity to complete an enrichment project at home for extra credit by creating a relief map of North Carolina that shows its three regions and major landforms. Students who wish to complete this project will need to turn it in by Friday, October 9. Students who complete this project will be given a 5 point bump in their social studies grade for the first quarter, up to 100% for the overall grade for the quarter. Students who choose not to do this project will not be penalized in any way as it is an extra credit project for students who would like further enrichment in social studies.

Mastery Club!
**Caution: This club is only for students wishing to step above and beyond the normal classroom experience…***
The Mastery Club is a club for students who are interested in researching and learning more about this amazing world of ours. Students can take advantage of extra class time or work at home to meet goals, but the work is the responsibility of the student. All you have to do is pick one of the 93 given challenges, research and record the information, then memorize the material. Next, find a teacher who will hear you recite the material. For each challenge met, students will receive a sticker and be deemed a ‘master’ at that challenge. The “Mastery Club Hall of Fame” is a tremendous honor and will be awarded to any student who earns at least 16 challenges during the school year. The list of students who have earned the right to forever be in the “Mastery Club Hall of Fame” will be posted in our rooms for the remainder of our teaching career.
If your child would like a copy of the list of challenges, it is available upon request. This program is modeled after Heather Renz’s Mastery Club. This is not a requirement for students, but an opportunity for students to go above and beyond expectations. It is thrilling to see how students challenge themselves.
Learning never ends and your journey to becoming a life-long learner begins here!
