## Snow Day Baggie

On Monday, first graders will bring home a snow day baggie. This baggie provides several fun activities your student can do at home should we have a snow day. These activities are similar to the fun and engaging activities we did on our mock non-instructional day the week before last. Please store this baggie in a safe place, as we may use it in the future as well. If you have any questions, please ask your child's teacher.

## No School

Just a reminder, there is no school this Friday, February 12th, or Monday, February 15th. Have a splendid long weekend!

## Valentine's Day

Valentine's class celebrations will be Thursday, February 11th. Look for information from your child's teacher.

## This Week in First Grade

This week in reading, we will continue our unit entitled "Readers Have Big Jobs to Do," which focuses on fluency, phonics, and comprehension. This unit will prepare students to read increasingly complex texts while maintaining meaning accuracy, comprehension, and fluency. Students will focus on word-solving strategies and reading independence. Specifically this week, students will be working on word inference, or inferring meaning from words.

## Math

In Math, we continue to focus on Geometry. First graders have been learning about the attributes of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. This week we will move on to explore partitioning. Students will learn what is half and how to make half. Encourage your child to see half in the world around them. Pizza, cookies, and cakes are great real-world examples of partitioning!

## Writing

Opinion writing continues to be our focus in writing. We are wrapping up writing about our "Best in Show" from our collections and will be moving on to writing reviews. You can encourage your child by discussing reviews of favorite restaurants, books, movies, etc. Building the dialogue will help your writer express his or her thoughts.
