Year 5 Newsletter
Term 1 - Thursday 15th September 2016
Welcome to the Year 5 Newsletter
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the second edition of the Year 5 newsletter for 2016/17.
Last Thursday and Friday, Kennedy School hosted Peter Sullivan, Mathematics Professor at Monash University, Melbourne and President of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers. He spent his time at school modelling lessons and leading seminars with teachers on mathematics teaching strategies. All the teachers have been putting this learning into practice and we have had some dynamic and enlightening sessions with our classes in the past week. Please see the photos below. Ask your child about some challenging maths learning that has been taking place lately!
The annual InCAS tests have been carried out and all classes have now completed the tests. Where children have been absent, they will complete any missed texts next week. More information on how to view the results will follow shortly.
Wishing you a very happy Mid-Autumn festival!
From the Year 5 Team!
Unit of Inquiry
Our first unit this year is under the theme 'Who We Are'.
Central Idea: Understanding how we learn helps us to take more responsibility.
Lines of Inquiry: An inquiry into...
different ways of learning (responsibility, trust)
how behaviours affect thinking and learning (function, self-regulation)
- our responsibilities as learners (reflection, perseverance)
5A - Spiral Decimals
5K - Place Value Jigsaws
5S - Mental Maths Challenges
Maths
A variety of learning engagements are underway with our focus on place value. The learning objectives again are:
- Apply place value to partition and rename numbers to tenths and hundredths.
- Recognise and order numbers to millions or beyond.
- Recognise, model and order decimal fractions to hundredths or beyond.
- Round decimal fractions to the nearest whole number.

Data handling learning has focused on collecting data related to the Multiple Intelligence Smarts investigated by students as part of our unit. Today the year group made a human info graphic to organise the data and interpret their findings. They made some interesting discoveries related to how students in the year group learn best (see the photo below).
Learning objectives:
- Collect, organise and represent data (including bar, line graphs and pie charts) where one object or symbol can represent many data values.
- Interpret and draw conclusions from data using range, scale and mode on graphs.
Children can also support their learning in the classroom by completing the Mathletics activities online. Well done to all the children who have already collected awards for their participation so far!
