HAL Happenings

HAL Happenings Online

Hi all. Yes, it's about time and I'm finally going digital with the HAL Happenings. I will plan on sending a link to the HAL Happenings to your email address about once a quarter. As most of you know, HAL Happenings is a way to get information to you about the HAL program and what your children are learning. I'm excited to get another school year under way and I welcome all the parents at Leonard Lawrence as well as my 'old' schools.

Delivery of Services

Mrs. Ediger, Mrs. Swanson and I will once again be providing high-ability learner services in the elementary schools. The delivery system that has been utilized the past few years will continue, but a few of our school assignments have been changed. I will now be delivering high-ability learner services at Leonard Lawrence and Mrs. Swanson will now be at Wake Robin.

The HAL teachers will continue to rotate through the schools on the eight day schedule. High-ability learner services will be provided on two days of the eight day schedule. The time frame of 75 minute sessions will remain unchanged.

As teachers of high-ability students we are always looking for best practices for our student population. Knowing that students with gifted tendencies enjoy the company of like minded peers which are not always age mates, we are looking for opportunities this year to cross grade and differentiate the curriculum to try and match interest areas. We also hope to delve into the social emotional needs of the high-ability students by introducing topics that specifically target areas of concern for gifted populations.

Our goal is to provide the best additional opportunities for each child to achieve at his/her highest potential.

My teaching schedule is as follows:

Fort Crook Days 1 and 5

Two Springs Days 2 and 6

Leonard Lawrence Days 3 and 7

Bertha Barber a.m. Days 4 and 8

Avery p.m. Days 4 and 8

Beginning of the Year Content

The fourth grade students will begin the year reviewing some of the critical thinking skills worked on last year. iPads were introduced to the high-ability students last year so fourth grade students will learn iPad etiquette and set up Google accounts. They will learn some of the educational apps they will be using throughout the year.
The fifth and sixth grade students will begin the year understanding and clarifying goals. They will be doing some self evaluation and learning some apps to utilize in putting their thoughts and ideas into a creative product
Information will come home shortly about WordMaster and Noetic Math Challenges for the coming year.
