Fall 2015

Happy Fall, Mustangs!

Welcome back, Mustangs, and welcome to our newest AVID students, the class of 2019! It's hard to believe we are already half way through the fall semester. This year we have one elective teacher, Mr. Williams, who is teaching all four levels of the AVID elective class. Our congratulations to Mr. Moser, former AVID 11/12 elective teacher, on his new position as activities director.

I thought this would be a good time to introduce our AVID site team. This is the group of individuals who work to support AVID students, often "behind the scenes." Right now this team is in the process of holding parent-teacher conferences for AVID students who earned one or more F in a core content class or whose GPAs fell below a 2.0. While it isn't as enjoyable to address struggles as it is to celebrate accomplishments, it is necessary to address struggles in order to have accomplishments to celebrate. This team works very hard to support our students, but we would not be able to be effective were it not also for the amazing support offered by our AVID parents and other West Mesa teachers. Thank you from the AVID site team to our AVID parents and West Mesa colleagues for supporting our students!

Ms. Knowles has been the AVID coordinator at West Mesa since 2011. Ms. Knowles is involved in recruiting at both the high school and middle school level to ensure students in the AVID program are Individually Determined to be successful. Ms. Knowles also monitors students grades in all classes and works with the AVID site team to develop and implement plans for students who need extra support. In addition, Ms. Knowles works with West Mesa staff to ensure AVID strategies are used in all content areas across campus.

Laine Douglas- ELA site team teacher

This is Laine’s first year at West Mesa, coming to us from Highland High School where she served for three years on the Literacy Team before becoming an AVID site team member. Laine is a strong advocate for the use of AVID strategies and protocols use in the classroom to promote student success and achievement. She welcomes opportunities to help other teachers learn to use these strategies effectively in their classrooms.

Adia Corley- MCL Site Team Member

This is Ms. Corley's 18th year as an educator of APS. Twelve of those years have been here at WMHS. She teaches different levels of Spanish and truly enjoys teaching students a second language. She has both a Bachelors and Masters in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Spanish, TESOL and Bilingual Education. She loves to travel, specifically to Spanish speaking countries. She loves to read and truly enjoys discussing literature with her AP Spanish Literature class. Ms. Corley incorporates AVID strategies in her regular and AP Spanish classes as a way to help students develop or fine-tune their Spanish language skills.

James Moser- AVID Site Team Member and Activities Director

Mr. Moser is a former AVID elective teacher. Mr. Moser is now the Activities Director at West Mesa, and helps organize and chaperon college visits so students can begin to visualize themselves as college students.
