Reader's Workshop

Reviewing Already Learned Material

As we draw to the end of our year, we will continue in our review of previously learned material. With the items brought in by students (newspaper articles, comic strips, magazines and favorites books) they will review learned material using these items.

On Tuesday they will use the newspaper article to locate nonfiction text features, on Wednesday, we will review beginning, middle and end while using our comic strips. On Thursday, they will use a magazine to read like a "grown-up" and on Friday the students will review all the skills they have learned this year by using their favorite book.

NEEDED for Next Week!

The second grade teachers are asking that each student bring the following (ON TUESDAY) for next week's reading lessons:

  1. Kid-Friendly Newspaper Article
  2. Comic Strip
  3. Kid-Appropriate Magazine
  4. Favorite Book

Fundations

In Fundations, the second grade students will continue to review the vowel teams they have learned this year. In particular, we will focus on the /ew/ sound as made by the vowel teams: oo, ew, ou, and ue. The key words for these vowel teams are as follows: smooth, chew, recscue, and soup. We will continue practicing to mark-up these words and focus especially on how to write neatly, using the fundations lines.

Writer's Workshop

Movie Reviews

As students write reviews of the movies watched during EOG testing, they will use all they have learned so far to conduct a retell of the movie and then state their opinion of the movie.

Later in the week, they will study the case of our DVD as we discuss why it is important to us as movie critics. They will notice that it is bold and eye-catching and the back of it tells a summary of the movie and shows what other critic's have said about it so far. We will then work on mimicking this in our own movie review.

Math

Creating Our Own Math Games

This week, the second grade students will use all that they have learned this year to apply to creating their own math game. They will learn how to write a math question, design their own game board and create clear directions for their games. We are looking forward to allowing the second grade classes to switch and play each other's games during the last week of school.

Science & Socials Studies

This week, students will continue to learn about economics, including both natural and man-made resources that we use in our day-to-day life. As well, we will use the text Alexander Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday as a reference text to discuss wise spending of money. This will also include learning about spending our money in order to buy the things we need and saving to buy that which we want.
